Cure for "Backing off" in Vista

When I asked about the "backing off" problem in Vista, I was advised to take WCG out of Programs and to put it in some other directory c:\ XXX. I did this and my problems have seemingly disappeared. After several re-boots, WCG is running fine.

Does anyone know why this is true?

Re: Cure for "Backing off" in Vista

Yes, which is why the next version of BOINC will *hopefully* put the 'project' folders and some other bits outside of the Programs directory, probably the user-data directory.

There is a 'Start Here' forum post on Vista, with multiple solutions and the reasons, the alternate location install the easiest, but definitely not the only!

WCG (if talking about the ol' UD client), only uses 1 core. I doubt there is a single Vista pre-installed machine sold that is not dual core at least, so 50% of the resources is by default wasted if not migrating to BOINC.... HCMD will finish in a few weeks time and going forward all projects CA's know about *do* run on BOINC (See the "Who should *not* use BOINC" thread for a comparative table.

It has to do with Vista's 'security' features, also known as User Access Control.
MS in their infinate wisdom decided program file folders should be read only...so the agent can crunch all day, but can't save unless the folder is elsewhere to save to.
It's like putting the ignition switch in the trunk of your car, it makes it harder to steal, but harder to drive also. I don't like the dimmer switch in the glovebox either...or having the gas & brake pedals reversed...

Re: Cure for "Backing off" in Vista

It's a little more complicated than that.

I think the next version of BOINC will solve the Program Files problem by altering the permissions on the folder. The separation of the data files is postponed until the version after (which is a major release - 6.0).

I think.

That is the basics of why it doesn't work in Vista.
I could go into a longer & more detailed explanation, but moving the installation out of the program files folder works, and that was the OPs basic question.
MS seems to think they should follow the path of AOL in making software that protects you from yourself and as a result has limited customization capability and IMHO, functionality.
Some people may think that's OK, but I think it is corporate suicide.

Re: Cure for "Backing off" in Vista

I checked with Rom, and I'm right about the feature/release status. Put another way, 5.10 will work (thanks to duct tape) on Vista. 6.0 will work most effectively on Vista (it had better....)
