Re: Carpet Rodent smoking cessation group

I didn't start smoking until I was in my 20's, but I got hooked real good. I was never able to smoke very much though - took too much of a toll. So I averaged about 2 packs a week - when I didn't abstain altogether. I would quit for weeks and even months at a time but could never give it up for good. It's a strange addiction. Even when the nicotine is still completely out of your system, you still have intense cravings. At one point I read that the success rate among heroin addicts is better than it is for smokers. Of course if heroin were legal, who's to say.

When I started therapy, I asked my shrink for Nicotrol nasal spray. It was still a fairly new product, but I must have read about it somewhere. It's excellent stuff from the point of view of completely eliminating any desire to smoke. One spray up each nostril delivers 1mg of nicotine. It works almost immediately and peaks in about 10 to 15 minutes. Just don't wait until you're jonesing really bad or else you might be tempted to use more and you don't want to induce nicotine poisoning. That has to be one of the top 10 worst experiences I've ever had. Ranks a little higher than a bad case of food poisoning.

The best approach is to use a transdermal patch in combination with the nasal spray. This gives you a stable plasma level with the ability to handle passing cravings. The destructions on both products say not to use them in combination with other sources of nicotine, but a study I read about many years ago used just this approach. You do however need to be very careful.

It's also worth noting that there are genetic differences in the extent to which they are likely to be addicted to nicotine. I think that explains why a lot of people are able to quit with no problem or just smoke socially. So if quitting seems harder than it should be based on what you've heard from others, don't get down on yourself.

I know some people here have also tried Zyban and Chantix(sp?), hope they'll post here too.

Give the butts the boot.

Hi
I got so bad that I could not get smoke enough to stop the "Nic Fits"
no matter how much I puffed away!
Back when I quit I remember thinking if I was going
have the "Fits" even if I chain smoked... Why pay! Why Smoke...
One day I was standing next to the trash thinking that way.
That was the moment I knew that I had had ENOUGH!
So I tossed em in the trash with anger and Praise God; never went back to
being a slave to R.J. Reynolds again!

Re: Carpet Rodent smoking cessation group

I quit 8 yrs ago April 10th.

I tried everything to quit. I smoked 2 packs a day for 19 yrs.

Even in nursing school, and Anatomy and Physiology class with 2 sets of lungs set up (real ones) 1 normal beautiful pink lungs, and 1 ugly shrunken crusty holey black ones...I wasn't fazed. Me and my classmate went out and lit one up and laughed! Even tho right in front of our faces we were putting air into them and the air was coming out the holes, and we saw how the smoker's lungs were like melted plastic and no elasticity! Y*U*C*K*Y

Then, years later I went and got hypnotized in a smoking sessation course through a local hospital and tada! NO SMOKE NO MORE It was the best 40 dollar investment I ever made.

biggrin

Re: Carpet Rodent smoking cessation group

I'm crunching to kick CA butt..ergo the destructive ciggie butt as well. Gave up the weed many moons ago when a close relative died from esophageal cancer. Second hand smoke is a killer - Thinking of loved ones might be a strong motivation to quit.

Yup really kept me from lighting up another cig. If I did that then I would have had to quit again.

Oh I did cry like before, but I had gotten something from the hypnotism to STOP me from lighting up and giving in to that craving. Yay!!!

So about 3 weeks later I was much more calm. Then totally no craving ever again.

Thing was tho, my bronchial tubes hurt soooo bad for like 3 months I thought something was wrong. But, it was just recouperating from all the smoking that shuts down their proper working. So they had to 'get over' the yucky smoke induced lack of function and get working.

Boy what a relief to have that gone and no more coughing, or asthma, or bronchitis. No more phlegm stuck in my windpipe. Food tastes like brand new. And no more stinking like smoke and no more paying $5.00 a pack!

It really was the end of the line for me. I had tried the patch 3 times, the Welbutrin medicine, the gum, cold turkey. Yes, getting hypnotized is cold turkey but it gives you a key to resist the cravings without using any nicotine in any form to ween yourself off.

But if you don't want to really quit, then I am sure it wouldn't work just like any other time one tries to quit and fails.

We always want an easy way out, but really it is hard and just toughing out the cravings for 3 weeks can seem like an eternity. That's why the hypnotism worked for me...I had been given a stop button on giving in. I didn't give in and I got over it.

Thank God!!!!

smile
