I have four computers running WCG. Three are stable and just run all the time: an XP desktop and a Vista Home Premium Desktop at home, on a cable modem; an XP laptop at work on DSL.
----------------------------------------I have a Vista Business laptop that I take to work and then bring home, and run in both locations. With this computer, I have had a load of problems keeping WCG running. I think that I have found this: I need the configuration to accurately indicate the kind of ISP, cable or DSL. So, I need to at least re-configure, or, at most, re-install each and every time I move this machine. If that is the case, I can do it easily enough, but it sure is clunky to have to do this. Winamp asks the same question, but works both at home and at work without all of that re-configurating (neologism. George Bush joke). Any advice? >>RSM |

Either BOINC or UD shouldn't care.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but many years ago when I had a DSL connection, Windows treated it as dialup. If that's still true, you may be able to get around the problem by setting up DUN (dialup networking) to automatically connect whenever a program requests an internet connection.
----------------------------------------Your ISP should be able to tell you how to do this - don't remember off hand. Or if you don't want to be on hold for an hour, it should be simple to find out online. If you don't have any luck, post again and I'll look it up. When the connection is not available, it should ignore it - just like with multiple wireless networks you may access. Go into the properties of each connection you set up in "Network Connections" and check off the box that asks if you want an icon displayed for that connection. Then you should be able to see with a glance at the system tray what connections are active and which are unavailable. ![]() ![]() |

Any advice? >>RSM If you read the "Vista How To...." post in the Start Here forum, your tune will soon go "All my troubles are so far away". Probably you wont have to go beyond point 1 and subsequently doing point 5, will keep another potential issue from your doorsteps.

Thanks. made a new Folder, moved WCG from Programs into the New Folder and had immediate success. So far, about 15 hours.
