Many tasks at the same time

Hello,

I'm new with Boinc.

I would like to know if it is possible to execute many tasks at the same time. My brother, when he registered to WCG, started with two tasks and he doesn't know why/how (reason he can't help me)... so if someone can help me, I would appreciate that.

Also, my Boinc only use 42'ish MB (sometime less) of my harddrive space (is it the space that the research take?)... I would like to know if it is possible to raise this. If yes, is it worth (will my researches go faster, etc.) and what does it do.

Thank you,

Xanthar

Re: Many tasks at the same time

I am no expert but the only point in running more than one task at a time is if you have multiple processors or a milti-core processor. In that case you run one task per processor or core. This happens automatically on the one dual core processor system that I have.

Boinc will only use as much hard disk that it needs to. Like you I am using very little hard disk. Just over 100Mb on my fastest system that has 3 days of tasks queued up. Less on all of the others. The only things that will make the tasks run faster are a faster processor and more memory if your system does not have enough.

Re: Many tasks at the same time

"multiple tasks"
There are several ways of thinking of this:

Choice 1
You can select one or more WCG projects. BOINC will get them at random and run each sequentially. The UD version does the same thing, and also has phase 1 of the Muscular Dystrophy project.

Choice 2
You can select one or more BOINC projects, with or without WCG. BOINC will run each for awhile, and then move on to the next after the amount of time you give. Due to checkpoint limitations, several hours for each project is recommended, or your percentage may not increase at all. Scheduling can get strange. If one project only takes a few seconds, you will probably only get most of those, because they are higher priority. Projects with similar due dates mix the best. Don't try to mix a climate simulation project with ANYTHING, since each workunit can take months to finish. We want you to run WCG, naturally.

Choice 3
I have found that the DepSpid (Dependency Spider) can run CONCURRENTLY with other BOINC projects. It only takes a small bite of your computer, and runs while you are connected.

Yes, if you have a dual core computer, you can run multiple BOINC projects simultaneously. The UD version will only run one project at a time per computer.
