Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

First I have to say that I'm from Germany and my English isn't well as my german speaking.

But I've got a problem.
I had the UD program on my PC without problems. Then yesterday, I striked on the idea to install Boinc. And I did it. But now my cooler ist very loud.
Loud isn't the right word my cooler nerves, because first it is quiet, then loud, quiet, then loud ... ...

It sounds like a space probe which ist starting and shutting down, starting and shutting down.
'
I don't how I can it describe a litte bit better. But maybe someone of you knows what I can do, to stop this sound.

Thanks

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

Yes, that was to be expected as the, excuse my subdued french, dumb speed control of BOINC alternates between running and pause on a whole seconds basis where 60% translates to 3 seconds running and 2 seconds pause. The 3 seconds is enough to heat the CPU up high enough to kick the fan in gear.

Alternate: Find posts about Threadmaster. A dream I've been running for a longer time.... 60% is really 60%.

cheers

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

Hello SixerHood,
The UD client is automatically throttled to 60% CPU usage unless you change it. If you click on My Grid - Device Manager - Device Profiles - (BOINC profile), what percentage is 'Use no more than: xx % of processor time' using?

Note that the BOINC throttle is very course. 60% will run for 3 seconds then not run for 2 seconds. This tries to keep your laptop cool.

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

So, there is no chance to stop the sound without stoping the hole program?

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

Yes by setting BOINC to 100% and use Threadmaster to control the CPU cycle % allocation. Only works on W2K/WXP. To know if it works on Vista, someone would have to experiment.

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

Ok now I understand it.

I have to change the settings of BOINc to use 100% and then I have to install Threadmaster which controls the 100% to XX%.
But what's about the left % of my CPU, can I use the left % for other things or controls Threadmaster every program?

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

You can set a default percent, but since the other programs usually run at higher priority it effectively creates an environment identical to the CPU control for the old UD agent.

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

Thanks for your help ;).

I found the BES program, and it's great.
But one thing disturbs me. BES doesn't start with Windows and with the same old settings.
I'm able to start BES with Windows, but not with the old settings.
Is there a option to fix this problem?

Tanks for everbodys help.

Re: Loud cooler with boinc and Notebook

BES can only remember one process settings on restart with 2 more that can be selected from the active processes MANUALLY, thus for anyone running multi-project not suitable. After trialling, I send it to the software junk yard and kept TM as the recommended tool.
