I have a Lenovo X60 convertible tablet with an Intel Core Duo L2500 1.83MHz chip and 1GB of memory, running XP Tablet Edition 2005, v 2002, SP2.
Two things I do a lot is opening/refreshing my OE mail and hibernating. With WCG running, I CANNOT hibernate, and usually cannot open/refresh my mail w/o putting WCG into snooze mode. When I do that, the previous processes work immediately. In the mail for example, if I have 20 msgs, it says it's opening 1 of 20 for 5 or 10 minutes, then it goes on to 2 of 20 and also takes long. Interestingly, after the mail is finished reading in (during snooze) and snooze is off, I don't have a problem clicking the mail refresh - it happens immediately (but hibernate still won't work). I didn't know what was causing this, because it hasn't happened for the few months I've had the tablet. After I installed WCG it happened, but it didn't occur to me that it might be the culprit. I'm guessing it's either the chip or the OS, which aren't typical yet, or the combination. Thanks for your attention, Claude Lillie member id - cjnj |

1. hibernating - I don' think your pc will hibernate when running UD client for WCG. Windows assumes that if a task is running - rather than just sitting in memory - that you do not want it to hibernate. For example, if you are downloading a large file, windows would consider the program doing the dl active and therefore will not hibernate. You might be able to get around this with the BOINC client if you install it as a process. There are others here with the expertise to advise you on this so hang tight until they respond to your post.
----------------------------------------2. very, very sluggish performance can often be a sign that you do not have enough disk space allocated to virtual memory. Neither the BOINC nor UD client should interfere with normal operations on your computer. Both run with the lowest possible priority so virtually any other task will take precedence. However both do use memory. What could be happening is that when you put the agent into snooze mode, it writes any memory resident data out to disk and then releases that memory back to the system. That then gives your system enough virtual memory to run properly. If you don't know how to allocate more virtual memory and want to try that, please post again. I just had a similar problem. Somehow virtual memory was being allocated on only one of my drives on one pc. I had to go in and permit the system to allocate virtual memory on each drive. Once I did that, I could once again run multiple memory intensive programs without it slowing to a crawl or crashing. ![]() ![]() |

Hello cjnj,
twilyth is giving some good advice. The first trhing you have to tell us is whether you are running the UD client or the BOINC client. Secondly, open up Task Manager and see how much spare Virtual Memory you have. Lawrence |

On dial-up, uploading/downloading takes so much of the limited bandwidth that, yes, mail checking is difficult. My wife has learned to either snooze it or LET THE WOOKIE WIN (let BOINC finish). After the uploading/downloading is done, BOINC will get out of the way for anything else.

Hi folks. Very sorry that I haven't replied sooner. After my initial post and the first few suggestions, I went to work on answering the questions, which took a bit. After I had done the work, I didn't have the time to post a well-researched technical answer and had to be away for a while.
At any rate, I'm using the UD client and I have 1G memory. Microsoft had allocated 1521MB for a paging file, so I upped it to double 3042MB. That didn't seem to do anything for a no. of days. Then I had to go away. I've been using the PC remotely from where I am and, lo and behold, the PC IS hibernating and my OE mail is reading quickly as it should. When I got back on this post, I was sure that someone realized there was some sort of error in the UD client and fixed it, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Go figure. Had it not worked, I was going to say that the UD client, it seems to me, should be like any other application. If I tell Windows to hibernate, everybody goes - the grid client shouldn't be any different, as it's running under the control of the OS and the OS said everyone has to go to bed |:-) |
