Re: Unable to connect to core client?

Please give us a little extra information: what operating system are you using? Where did you get BOINC from?

I have that happen with my Vista machine after an unscheduled (power outage) shutdown.
I uninstalled/reinstalled BOINC & it picked up work again.
For whatever reasons, it seems BOINC doesn't play well with VISTA, if you turn UAC on/off after installing BOINC, it seems to break it.

Re: Unable to connect to core client?

Hello cargod01,
It sounds as though you installed BOINC in Program Files (which Vista applies special security rules to) instead of creating a new directory C:\BOINC and installing BOINC in it. See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856 for instructions for running on Vista. Installing outside of Program Files lets a lot of legacy programs run without being broken by Vista's new security.

Re: Unable to connect to core client?

XP Pro, downloaded from worldcommunitygrid. Also, I can't connect with the UD agent either. Internet access is apparently normal, otherwise.

confused Re: Unable to connect to core client?

Hello JasonLC,
Sounds like you have tried both BOINC and the UD client. In this case I would suspect a firewall problem. What is your firewall program? Are you trying to communicate from a business computer?

Re: Unable to connect to core client?

JasonLC, the "Unable to connect to core client" error has nothing to do with your Internet connection.

BOINC is made from several parts. The two that concern us are BOINC Manager (the program you are running, boincmgr.exe) and the core client (boinc.exe). Normally, if the core client isn't running when BOINC Manager starts, then BOINC Manager will start it for you.

BOINC Manager communicates with the core client using RPC on localhost, port 31416. Normally this isn't a problem, but some paranoid security programs block it.

So, the error means either BOINC Manager wasn't able to start the core client (find out by looking for boinc.exe in Task Manager) or RPC is being blocked (check your security software - some tend to cause problems).
