I suggest you switch to BOINC. The BOINC science executables have no extension.

Be careful! WCG relies on trust. Remember your company's computers are your company's!

It is understandable they don't want executables to be downloaded and run from any old source.

If they are happy to trust WCG, then they can adjust their policies to permit executables from particular sources.

However, if they aren't happy for this, but find people are managing to subvert their policy by e.g. renaming exes, etc, AND particularly if that this is seen to be supported or encouraged by WCG, then companies would be quite right to start considering it malware.

And as a consequence, virus checker writers would be forced to include WCG in their list of malware to check for and remove.

And we don't want that!

Any suggestion that WCG could be considered malware in anyshape or form would be a disaster!!

WCG must be absolutely squeaky clean when it comes to their operations. Any question that they are trying to circumvent the wishes of any people whose equipment is being used to run the software, will be very very bad.

WCG need to go out of their way to ensure that everyone is made copmletely aware of what they are signing up to, particularly anyone whose computer it is running on (and that means the company itself when run on a company's computer - not simply the user of the computer!), and that everyone is made completely at ease with trusting the software.

This means completely respecting the wishes of anyone who, for whatever reason, however silly or groundless the reason may seem to us, does not wish to run the software on their computer.

If just one person managed (in collusion with or with the support of WCG admin,tech,etc) to circumvent a company's IT policy, and the press got wind of the story... the adverse publicity could be very damaging.

If you talk to your company and explain what WCG is and convince them why you should be permitted to run it, you never know, they may even decide to run it across all their computers to gain a bit of publicity on WCG home page!

The software license agreement makes it very clear that you may only particate in WCG on your own computer, or on a computer where you have permission to run it. This isn't usually a problem. Many organisations (academic especially) have an implicit agreement that people can install software they need. If you don't have this permission, you need to get it! If there is an explicit policy not to install software, then sorry: you cannot use those computers on the grid. Use your personal computer instead.
