I ran across another chatroom of a competing project recently and one of the criticisms made of the WCG was that it hadn't yielded any scientific publications. Now, this isn't true, but when I went back the World Community Grid website I realised that it isn't obvious that the WCG has resulted in papers. There isn't a list of publications that have come out of the WCG and finding out what has been produced involves more effort than some potential members are likely to expend. Would it be possible to add a separate publications section under research to highlight that this grid produces important scientific findings?

WCG projects have not published a great deal, yet. WCG is new and shiny, and academic research is slow and painstaking.
Here's an idea of the timeline: Once a project has been approved to run on WCG, the techs will work with the scientists to get the software ready. This may take 6 months. Then the project launches. This is the window into the process that we see - the actual crunching. It's also where we get to contribute. During the crunching, the scientists check the results coming back, and (depending on the project) they may be able to move ahead with the next steps. Crunching can take mere months or several years. Once the data is available to the scientists, they are going to analyse it, and start writing. Usually a big grid project will result in many papers, but let's just track the first paper. Writing it and checking all the facts may take many months. When the paper is completed, it is submitted for peer review. This can easily take another year. Once the paper is approved and published, the scientists will also make sure that all the results are freely available. So, this is why WCG projects are only just beginning to produce tangible results. More papers will be coming ut of the peer review pipeline fairly soon, and I hope to see a pretty constant stream of published research. |

Only the first paper from the HPF1 project has been published, earlier this year. The first paper from FAAH has just been published (we got the news today). More on that one when it becomes available.

Yes, I know all too well that academic publishing is slooow. I was just thinking that it would be good to let potential contributors know that the WCG is producing results, especially since Folding@Home seems to be getting all of the attention lately now that it is on PS3.
I am very happy to hear that Fight AIDS at home has yielded a paper. That is brilliant. I look forward to hearing about more publications. Again, a place with a listing of the resultant publications with the abstracts would help to demonstrate the importance of this project, although perhaps it would need a little explanation at the beginning that WCG hasn't been running that long and that academic publishing takes a long time. |

We do have results pages. Here are the results to date for HPF: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/archives/viewHpfResults.do
Results like this also get featured on the site main page and in the newsletter. |
