Hi,
I was wondering in case I decide to run my new PC with for instance W2K and W98/SE if it is possible to run the grid client on both OS's and working with the same device-name and work unit By doing so my new PC keeps crunching independent on what OS is active on the same work unit. ----------------------------------------If you have each OS on a different hard drive segment i.e. Win2K on C and Win98 on D. Boot into each OS and download the agent putting the Win2K in C:/Program Files and the WCG agent for Win98 in D:/Program Files then when you boot into each OS you could download a work unit into each OS separately. Both Agents could be registered in your name and you would show up as having 2 devices even though you've only got 1 PC. When Win2K was running it would complete the C Drive WU when Win98 was loaded you would crunch the D Drive WU. The only thing to watch is that a WU must be returned to WCG within 3 week or it expires and the WU is allocated to another users PC. If you stayed in Win2K for 3 week then the Win98 WU would expire for example. An unusual question. If you set your system as above I don't envisage any problems. Happy Crunching Dave |

Just to let you know, the last computers my brother and I built used pentium IV's, 2.4 ghz. He tried to load windows 98, and windows would not run properly (wanted the ability to dual boot to 2k and 98, don't ask ME why). Upon contact, windows support claimed 98 would not run properly on the faster cpu's, but had a fix which they emailed him. However, even with the fix it would not work properly. You know, after all this typing, it may have been windows 95 and not 98. I would check first, unless you just want to mess around with it.

Hi frans6nl,
this is the exact combination (W98SE + W2k) I run for years now on PIII Coppermine 1.1 GHz. I crunch WCG on both of them with no problems encountered. All goes exactly as described by David in his reply to your post, except W98, AFAIK, has to run from C disk, while W2k can run from any disk. Beware, though, if you run DOS programs or play DOS games on W98, they use to consume all CPU time and WCG Agent, which is running with the lowest priority, gets nothing. Happy crunching, Ivang. |

Hi guys, and girls of course
I know I've to install the client twice when using diverent OS's I gave an example with a P4 with W2K and 98SE but I more thinking of Linux v.s W2K in a dual boot configuration. I think it must be possible to let the both OS's work on the same WU.... The fun of it, I think, is a speed test between OS's on the same machine... just for spicing up the crunching Greetings from Holland Frans Member of the Dutch Power Cows |

It would be an interesting test. An impossible test at the moment, of course, considering there is no linux version of the grid software. Yet.
It would also be tricky (although it can be done) and quite a waste of time to do, because you would have to process the exact same WU twice in order to compare the times properly, since each WU differs in complexity. |

Compudude,
Yeah the tricky part is how to compare the both OS's I was thinking to do that in the following way: Load a wu in OS-1, let it run until 20%, stop, calculate the total runtime, reboot to OS-2, restart the client and let it crunch until 50%, stop, calculate the total runtime compare both runtimes. I know it sounds not really scientific, but I think it is fun Personally I'll think Linux beats W2k in this ballgame, but what will be the outcome if someone pulls the same trick comparing linux v.s. XP-64 on a AMD3500? Greetings from Holland Frans Member of the Dutch Power Cows |
