That day I found out the "BREAKING NEWS: GRID.ORG MISSION COMPLETE On Friday, April 27, 2007, Grid.org announced it has completed its mission to demonstrate the viability and benefits of large-scale Internet-based grid computing, and will be retiring its famous efforts to support critical health research. " I felt so sad.
After few days then I tried to figure out what could I do after this news, I decided to join the world community grid with every project (totally 4 or 5 projects , I don't mind which one only if my computer can be of any assistance). Yesterday was my first day to join "world community grid ", after 11 hours task run time , as usual I "exit" the UD agent and happily went to bed. This morning I didn't know where all the calculation go? As usual they can be saved in my computer, now they are completely gone ? I have read the following two posts such as "CHECKPOINTS" but I don't understand how to save it till now ? http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12972 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11332 I am now running "Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy" It said: When the PDB code / Protein Symbols in the 'I' screen left hand bottom change and the 2 proteins in the main graph assume the same colours. Colour changes are pure random, thus could on outside chance assume same colour even if checkpoint was reached. Watch the PDB code change for absolute indication! (See Sample Image and FAQ for description) What does "2 proteins" means? I don't need to press EXIT any more ? .... I really need help about saving problems !!! Thank you ? |

We are currently seeing the biggest work units in the Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy project. They still only checkpoint 20 times, between each rotation. Because the work units are so tough to compute, it sometimes takes a loooong time between checkpoints.
Normally, work units checkpoint every few minutes - these are very unusual. If you don't want to lose any work, you can try hibernating your computer instead of shutting it down. Alternatively, you could deselect the HCMD project, and let faster computers tackle these monster work units. |

Thank for the quick response.
I just wanted to ask what do you mean by "deselect the HCMD project" then I see you call the" Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy" project as the monster. Since the hibernating plan is not going to work for my computer. I better say good bye to the project. Thanks for the advise. |

What's the rush? We DO have other projects here: Fight Aids @ Home, Genome Comparison, Human Proteome Folding

hey I meant farewell to that particular HCMD on my previous post.(I have checked all the four projects. )
But I was just checking all the requirements for each project, in fact HCMD is not the highest demanding monster. I also check my device information Processor / memory/ network are as good as other devices even a bit better. but the defeated part is the Storage. Comparison device:5 GB. Mine is only 0.98 GB. Could the saving problem come from here ? the worse storage performance ? Or I remember the windows system had its renewal right before I turned off the computerlast night ? I really like to give it a try , let my computer hibernated for once for this HCMD project. Hope it runs well. Thank you , retsof ! |

You are running the UD version. Default storage is 0.98Gb (1 Gb) Go to the storage section of your device profile and change it to 10 Gb. It doesn't use more than a small amount of it, but it helps the scoring a little bit.
----------------------------------------The stats is running now, so I cannot follow along. Turned OFF the computer? You can if you want. Mine just keeps running.

The storage isn't a problem. It's just that these particular work units are taking a long time between checkpoints.

That's true. A loooong time between checkpoints.
----------------------------------------Part timers have problems with those. The 1 Gb question just came up. It's just a small scoring tweak.

Hi Denise,
----------------------------------------Two buzz words you have, but other might want to read up on: a. Checkpoint (autonomously saving of work progress at intervals) . You cant force them, but you can identify a good time to close your computer. Visit Start Here forum for an explanation and samples. BOINC 5.8.16 has a feature to activate the logging of those in the message tab. b. Hibernation . A member wrote a long instruction. The advantage over standby is: 1. Zero use of electricity, 2 resume work where you left off. Please, Please, do not use the power switch (mine needs a programmed 10 seconds, so have time to come to my senses). The one way to damage work units is using it or the reset button. Ideally exit the client, than use the operating system shut down procedure. cheers

Thank you ,Sekerob !!!
After I read your reply I knew I misunderstood the meaning of Hibernation.--I thought it was the same meaning of standing by. Please do write more aobut those buzz words. Thank you ! I kept my computer on the whole night last night and finally got the first run completed. As a environment supporter and a partimer of computer using I really don't like to keep the computer on to consume so much electricity. I will try the method of HIBERNATION in the link you offered. As to checkpoints I don't know anything about BOINC 5.8.16 though I saw them somewhere in the webpage, I think we use United Device ? And the BOINC is another system? |
