PC rebooting randomly

Hi folks

New to WCG from Grid.org and I have noticed 2 problems.

Over the last few days, (since I joined wcg) my PC will reboot itself randomly with an error message from Microsoft that some device driver has caused the problem.

Also when my PC reboots, I have to go into the BOINC utility and attach the local machine (ie my PC) to the project. Whay does this not happen automatically.

I've had problems with my machine rebooting on its own. If the problem seems to be caused by running boinc, it could be an overheating problem or a problem with your motherboard (m/b) bios.

First, try throttling back boinc to say 50% and see if the problem recurs - please post if you need help on doing this.

If that doesn't fix it, then check the website for your m/b and download the latest bios. post again if you need to update - will be happy to provide instructions. (or im, irc me - hopefully will be online soon).

If throttling solves the problem then post again and will give info on what to look for.

Don't want to go into a lot of detail until we narrow down problem.

good luck.

Re: PC rebooting randomly

Can you tell a bit more:

What Windows (W2K, WXP, Vista)
What exact driver error message
Any Security software like Windows Defender, DEP
BOINC: The WCG download or the one from Berkeley and if latter, installed as single user, all users or service.

cheers

Re: PC rebooting randomly

The trottle is set to 60% but on grid.org it ran for years at 100%.

I will try to get it back to 50% anyway.

I am running XP SP2. PC has 704mb of ram.

Never actually caught the error message as eveytime it happens, I've been away.

I am running NIS 2007 (which I am hearing is so buggy it glows in the dark).

Re: PC rebooting randomly

Given that I have never witnessed the problem, this might suggest a problem with the BOINC screen saver.

Does this prompt anything?

Re: PC rebooting randomly

To see if BOINC is a source:

1. Look in message tab and scroll to top and note time of start up
2. Go to BOINC install directory and open with text editor the stdoutdae.txt file and find log entries before the start time found under point 1.
3. If anything suspicious is entered, copy the entries and about 10 lines before and post here so we can read them.

A BSOD (Blue screen of death) would not have allowed for any errors to be logged.

Added: What is the physical RAM you know the system has and how much is shown in the Message tab at top of log?

cheers

Sorry - if already at 60%, 50% prob won't make much difference.

Boinc runs as a process so maybe that makes a difference - not my area of expertise.

Probably not bios either given what you've said - but can't hurt to check for an update - just not a priority right now.

Easiest fix is to download ud agent for WCG and disable boinc for now (actually, uninstalling boinc would probably be the best thing to do since even if disabled I think it is still in memory). Boinc is best overall and especially for multicore cpu's but ud agent will also get the job done.

When you have the time, you can try to get boinc working.

If problem persists with ud agent, then something else must have changed at around the same time you installed boinc.

Re: PC rebooting randomly

Sorry John, gave wrong file name. It's stdoutdae.txt. Can you repost please.

On NIS 2007... it's hard to test if the booting is random and happening in absence, but getting an alternate like Avast or AVG temporarily and uninstalling NIS would be a future action. Some of these security programs cause major issues with the WCG or BOINC agents. Norton had the recent attention of introducing buggy definitions obstructing the UD agent.

Visit the Useful Utilities thread in the Start Here forum for hardware testing software. Intermittent RAM failure is a possible as well.

Re: PC rebooting randomly

I'll defer to Sekerob on the log info, but I did look up 10061 and it means that the server actively refused the connection.

However, I don't see how boinc, a normally well-behaved program, would cause a spontaneous reboot just because the wcg server happened to be out of action.

Uninstalling boinc and reinstalling the ud agent for wcg would be the safest and easiest thing to do. If you still have the problem at that point, then you would know for sure that boinc was or wasn't the problem.
