Re: PC rebooting randomly

I think my initial suspicion of the BOINC screen saver being the culprit is correct.

I've just disabled the BOINC screen saver for the normal XP one and the PC has been running OK now for a while.

I'll leave it as it is for the present, and if it reboots sponteanously again, I'll follow the suggestions.

The error message from MS says it is a device driver, and the NIS was installed for several days before the move to wcg and there was no problems once I got it downloaded installed.

Word of advice. If you are going for the NIS upgrade to 2007, buy the package. It took 3 days and several cancelled transactions to get the job done correctly online.

Just a word of thanks for all the suggestions. I'll probably NEVER be one of thise users who ever knows enough to help others, but I am very grateful for the help I get.

Good point - low allocation of virtual memory could cause system to hang and possibly reboot.

What's Running will give you tons of info including virtual memory usage for each process. It's free and can be dl'd from http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/main.aspx

Aside from any tranaction problems, I don't like either Norton 360 or NIS 2007. Many of the standard features from 2006 have to be dl'd as an add-on. Plus, you don't have any control over animations like flash, animated gifs, etc. Before, you could control these, as well as java/javascript, cookies and a host of other things both globally and on a site by site basis. It seems that Symantec has officially sold out. They have to know that most people aren't even going to know to dl the ad-blocking software. And for those who do, they've dramatically limited the amount of control you have. Whatever happened to serving the people who pay the bills? B@st*rds.

I used both progs for a week or so and asked for a refund on both. I'm going back to the symantec corporate client plus zone alarm and spysweeper.

Don't get spyware doctor by pctools either - it causes norton antivirus to crash and give you persistent error msgs - a real pain in the patootie.

Re: PC rebooting randomly

In my device profile, I have 2 devices listed, yet I only have the one PC connected to wcg.

One is a BOINC agent and the other is a UD agent.

Given that I am a BOINC cruncher, should I delete the other?

Re: PC rebooting randomly

No.

You can't delete devices anyway. A new one is created every time you install an agent.

Don't worry, the old one will be hidden in a few days, so you won't be confused by having old devices listed.

You might want to check out for a display drivers update and possible a GPU card BIOS update. BOINC uses OPENGL which might not be up to snuff on your system. Graphics on BOINC have caused issues a number of times, so we're eager to know, if all the display driver/bios is current, what project was running and what-if any error messages there were.

cheers

Re: PC rebooting randomly

d oh Just remembered that the sequence of the crunching timing and the screensaver timing is important. First the crunching idle time, say 5 minutes, than the screensaver say 6 minutes. We've not heard of it causing spontaneous booting.

Re: PC rebooting randomly

Here is the system info:

I know how to set the screen saver to kick in after a set amount of time, but how do I set the crunching idle time. (What is the crunching idle time). I have the PC set so that it crunches constantly.

With regard to bios etc, I have the PC set so that it gets the latest updates from Microsoft automatically. Would this be enough to ensure that bios updates are downloaded aswell or do I need to long onto Packard Bell to get these.

BTW since I switched from the BOINC screen saver, the PC has behaved beautifully.

If the idle time trick does the job I will go back to the BOINC screen saver. Otherwise I will stick with things as they are.
