Re: Turning off PC and loosing work

You can safely uninstall UD.

BOINC has a throttle, too - but it works differently, and is controlled with the rest of the BOINC settings, in your device profile: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/v...iguration.do?name=Default

Re: Turning off PC and loosing work

I have deleted the wcg installation and am running purely on BOINC.

Thanks to all concerned for the advice.

As stated I am a fairly lazy low-key cruncher who just likes to let the PC get on with it.

However I will be checking in every now and then, so hopefully there will be news about the shut down tool and also the new cancer projects.

I actually think it should be a mandatory aspect of all operating systems to have PCs connected to grids like this. Surely it is possible for the OS of a PC to check connection speed and if above a certain level, then connect and crunch.

It should also be possible for ISPs to make traffic to grids like this free of charge so that essentially there is no cost to the PC owner.

It is such an ABSOLUTE waste of computing power to have the vast majority of home and office PCs doing essentially nothing all day.

Thanks again.

Re: Turning off PC and loosing work

IBM supplies WCG on computers for its workers. You will see a very high number of IBM teams here in the list.

Most other organizations are "scared" of unknown activity so prohibit this charitable work, but uploads are encrypted and sent in the secure socket. After millions and millions of grid workunits, neither grid.org nor worldcommunitygrid.org found any examples of unauthorized net intrusions or virii. (There were a few false positives in the scanners themselves, but that's another issue.)

Can YOUR company say the same about THEIR network?

Re: Turning off PC and loosing work

UD add-ons may or may not work on the WCG version of UD.

UDMonitor runs fine, if you remember to start it with the WCG bat file.

UDNewTray also worked for me this morning when the WCG tray icon failed to appear on reboot.

J-Q...the Boinc version is far better than trying to overcome the difficulties of the UD agent...I recommend you switch!

Re: Turning off PC and loosing work

Hi John

Advisors , my personal opinion and suggestion is that this is more for support forums and not for this one , where many will be posting in a few hrs , between others me

Surely you can copy or move

Greetings and thanks

Re: Turning off PC and loosing work

Rarely does a thread get moved, it's just much appreciated if a Thread opener first selects the correct forum before creating one. Certainly if the title is not ringing alerts, will the chat room post be looked at After the 'Active Research' and 'Member Board' fora where problems should be reported. With the large increase in Chat Room threads, support questions are pushed off the current list very quickly.

The deletion of the WCG agent is/was not necessary. The removal of the link in the Start Up folder (Windows Start menu, Programs, Automatic Execute/Startup folder) would have sufficed. Sometimes if BOINC servers have been down for a long time, the UD agent would still be able to get work to continue crunching.

Edit: corrected spelling.

Re: Turning off PC and loosing work

try this link, it's far better: http://udmon.sourceforge.net/

and to start it for WCG agent use the batch file!
