Hello folks
----------------------------------------Just joined from the old Grid.org. On grid.org there was a small tool called udshutdowner. This tool allowed you to shutdown your PC at the next checkpoint and thus not lose any of the progress made on the workunit. Is there a similiar tool for this grid. I have looked for an hour on the various threads and can't find one. The closest was someone suggesting a hibernate option and someone else who suggested checking the info screen to see if there was a recent save. I am a fairly lazy CPU cycle doner (as is the VAST majority of members really). All I want to do is turn on the PC in the morning, leave it running while I use it and then turn it off before I go to bed. As such something like udshutdowner (written by someone called asciimonster) would be perfect for the likes of me. Regards John ![]() |

Hello johnlod,
Grid.org attracted a number of creative programmers who accomplished near-miracles. No, we do not have the equivalent function yet. But we are pushing an open source program named BOINC that we hope will eventually have everything. For the moment, please do not worry about a few minutes computing lost. Lawrence |

Hi Welcome to your new home. I cant say much as I am as new as you, but they run a UD agent here. Will the shutdowner work the same as when used at grid.org? I do have 1 question: why do you turn it off at night? Im not being critical. you policies are your affair. Just curiouse. BTW, if you find you have any adjustment disorder issues, drop by the ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by courine at May 1, 2007 2:20:52 PM] |

UD add-ons may or may not work on the WCG version of UD.
----------------------------------------UDMonitor runs fine, if you remember to start it with the WCG bat file. The BOINC version is working on a mechanism to wait for the next checkpoint before closing. It may or not be ready yet, but is close. I am still running 5.8.15 for Windows and it's not there yet. 5.8.16 has been announced for production. The release notes indicate some attention to checkpoints. Update BOINC from the Berkeley download site if you are not using that version yet. The easiest way to find it is to Google for "BOINC". Version 5.8.16 CPU model string includes Family/Model/Stepping. Fix errors if detach project while file transfers active. Limits on # of file transfers apply to uploads and downloads separately. Add checkpoint_debug log flag. Set processor affinity mask for benchmark threads (Windows) Disable connection caching in Curl. Add 'Detach when done' flag to projects (for clean detach, e.g. from account manager). Delete all files when detach from project. Fix bugs on Mac OS X 10.3 that could create bad users/groups. 5.8.17 is still experimental and has some problems.

I run XP2. Can Boinc run OK on that.
----------------------------------------With regard to turning off the PC at night, I don't like to leave it on at night in case of fire. My PC is at home in a downstairs room. There is no way I am taking a chance of an electric fire under my kids. I know it is not likely, but I don't want to take the chance. John ![]() |

Do I have to uninstall my current WCG installation or can I just download BOINC and everything will take care of itself.

My PC is at home in a downstairs room. There is no way I am taking a chance of an electric fire under my kids. Sleep downstairs, and move the computer upstairs. John That concern is similar to the person that was worried about flying on an aircraft on which somebody else brought a bomb. A statistician advised, "The odds of a bomb on an airplane are 100,000 to one. Carry a bomb with you. The odds of TWO bombs on the SAME flight are over 1,000,000 to one." I have 4 computers crunching here, and none of them are burning. LAPTOP computers with defective batteries have been subject to fires lately. If they are on the recall list they will be replaced. I have not seen any reports of any computers from the thousands of crunchers here catching fire, either desktop or laptop. We also have a throttle feature to keep laptop computers from getting too warm.

Do I have to uninstall my current WCG installation or can I just download BOINC and everything will take care of itself. You do not have to uninstall the WCG UD, but taking it out of the startup would eliminate conflicts. Simply don't run it. I actually fired up the WCG UD myself for a few days when the BOINC servers went down due to blizzards in Colorado. When the BOINC servers returned, I finished the UD workunits and restarted BOINC. No problem.

I now have both wcg and boinc running.
----------------------------------------So at present they are each trying to run a project at wcg. I would like to kill off the wcg installation so that only the boinc runs. Will this require deleteing wcg or would that mess up boinc. I have boinc pointing at wcg only as I would like to get crunching at the cancer projects that are proposed. Also will boinc respect the 60% run rate that wcg uses as a default or is there a way to set this. ![]() |
