Re: grid.org are pulling the plug.

You can.

Lots of questions, I'll try and answer them in order:

You can treat the WCG UD agent just like the old grid agent. BOINC on USB drives is kind of a gray area, but if you can get get out through your firewall, then you may be able to run BOINC normally. Anyway, first thing to try is copying all the BOINC files over, and see if it "just works".

BOINC is generally better, but it doesn't matter much unless you have a dual core machine, in which case BOINC is twice as good.

Chose whichever projects you like, or select them all to let WCG send a tailored mix just for you. The Help Defeat Cancer project has completed. Just waiting for some housekeeping to be finished up, then it will be removed from the options and archived. Our next cancer project (completely unrelated) is due some time this summer.

Re: grid.org are pulling the plug.

Thanks for the prompt replies. It sounds good so far.

Since both my home PC's are single core, I won't try anything complex like trying to make full use of my dual core PC at work!! (I'd dig myself into a real hole! It'll just have to run at 50%).

BOINC sounds better, but it is results returned that really count, so unless there is some other over-riding reason like BOINC being more efficient I presume it is best to let the software work out which is the best to run, BOINC or UD, based on how powerful my PC is?

Or should I just go for the sneaker-net friendly (friendlier?) UD?

It's a bit of a shock grid.org/UD closing like it did, I was with them for 5 years and did over 3 CPU years of work. <sigh>

Regards.

Re: grid.org are pulling the plug.

Traveller UK,

If you use the BOINC client, and you have a dual core (or even more cores) machine, then it will run two work units at once... which is obviously twice as good!

Like others have said though, it's always a good idea to have permission to run projects like these on computers you don't own. I'm an IT admin myself and I'm very weary of our users installing programs and doing things on computers that I will end up having to fix if they break it! I am quite flexible though and will assist most users in installing and configuring certain things on their PCs. As long as it's not the All Advantage toolbar and free WildTangent mahjong games! wink

Re: grid.org are pulling the plug.

Here's the official announcement: http://forum.grid.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=599007#599007

Of course, all grid.org members are more than welcome here. I've written a few notes in the FAQ to help with the transition. Welcome aboard!

So, WCG crunchers - if you know anybody crunching over at grid.org, give them a friendly push due WCG. After all, we have run the same sort of humanitarian, medical projects, and both use the United Devices agent.

It's sad when a project like grid.org shuts the doors - particularly so abruptly. Some reassurance - WCG isn't going anywhere. We have work coming out of our ears, and we hear from the WCG staff frequently. They check the forums every day. If they don't update us often enough, we (the Community Advisors) poke them for you. :-D

Do you hear that faint gurgling sound? Then shed a tear - it's the sound of water draining away. grid.org have pulled the plug!

Thanks for the help. We are allowed to run almost any legal software on our PC's at work, but there's no way anybody will make a hole in the corporate firewall for us.

Anyway, despite still having a few questions about how to get it to work @ work, the rest of my team from grid/UD has moved over here, so I think I will too! biggrin

I'll just take the plunge and see how I get on, hopefully I won't have to come back with more questions later (he says trying not to jinx it.) blushing .

Thanks again.

Re: grid.org are pulling the plug.

Welcome / Willkommen / Ben Venuti / Bien Venu,

look for posts with 'Sneakernet'. With BOINC it's quite involved but doable. It works for all projects, if you get it to work. Criticality is same PC type and same operating system!

We do not advocate installing on work PC's unless you have permission from Owners / IT managers! For that matter do not install without consent unless the machines are yours.

cheers
I tested sneakernetting with BOINC, and it didn't work at all. The registry dates got really confused between the multiple computers, and some workunits had due dates of 1900. Not good.

Sneakernetting with UD.EXE DOES work well if you have some offline computers you need to utilize. UDMonitor works well to stash some extra UD caches. The new USB traveldrives are even more reliable than floppy drives for moving data around, and some have even tried RUNNING things there. (I'm not sure about the long term effects.)

Re: grid.org are pulling the plug.

Hi all, I just crossed over myself. I found out they ended today.

Members - about 1,500,000 - with over 3,000,000 devices

This is decieving. Every time a formatted or had to re-register for whatever reason it added a device. The already a user function never worked for me. I had 17 devices over 2 years and 2 comps.

I sure hope the reseachers are sharing. I hate to crunch my 287 over again let alone the 400 million others..

Going BOINC now, I like saying the name, BOINC-BOINC!! Trying climate prediction but want to add Muscular Dystrophy work too. If that's UD agent only I guess not. You say Cancer is over so I'll pick Aids but I tried that when it was solo and the program was horrible. Maybe with BOINC and being here it's better. BOINC defaulted to Genome comparison since the two I picked didn't work.

Of coarse this all assumes I know what I'm doing and we know that breaks down to "ass" out of "u" and "me".

I do hope World Community Grid can clean out what won't work or folks switching over may get frustrated.

Re: grid.org are pulling the plug.

Hi cowseatmaize,

FA@H transferred from the separate network to WCG Nov '05 and has since run almost 39 million work units with very little problems accumulating almost 46 thousand CPU years of processing time. Daily stats for the project can be found here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProject.do?projectShortName=faah

Runs on UD on Windows and under BOINC on windows, Linux and MAC.

cheers.

Thats not what the notice said when I signed in in. It said WCG can pull the plug any time they want. Do I trust anyone now? I've just had that trust violated.
