How much would a school help if roughly 150 computers were added to the grid all with Pentium 4s ~3GHz some with 1GB of RAM and others with 256MB?
I could ask the administration if there will be a very noticeable benefit. I hope this is the right forum to ask. Thanks in advance. |

The contribution could be substantial. It all depends on how you might define the term "noticeable benefit." 150 machines would be 1/10% of 150 ,000 machines which does not sound like much. Their overall contribution would depend on how much other work is being done on them and the length of time they are left running. They are fairly high end machines and could possibly produce several results per twenty four hours of run time (work units are quite variable across the various projects). However, I am sure their contribution would be appreciated. It would certainly be a nice gesture if you can swing it. Good luck.

Hello Maurice Theriot,
Getting your school to participate as a Partner ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewBecomePartner.do ) would help even more than the added computers would. We are trying to convince society to contribute spare computer capacity for charitable purposes. Schools are the key to this goal. Eventually we hope that the rising generation will consider computer time donation as a standard charity, like school bake sales or donating blood to the Red Cross. The best way is to install BOINC as a service (running at lowest priority) and constrain it to run just 1 thread, so it will not take up computer memory trying to take advantage of the Pentium IV hyper-threading. You can use this URL to see how many computer hours are donated each day (expressed as the equivalent number of 24-hour computers): http://vspx27.stanford.edu/DCcomparison.html Here is a site that will let your school administrators see all the public distributed computer projects that are currently running: http://distributedcomputing.info/projects.html Lawrence http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/ |

Hello Maurice Theriot, Getting your school to participate as a Partner ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewBecomePartner.do ) would help even more than the added computers would. I requested information, and I downloaded the PDF. One thing that sparked my interest, is what exactly does a partnership do? I noticed various server-related information in the PDF file. Does that mean partners do more than just donate time and try to convince others to support the project? |

Really, the only requirement for a partner is that they feature WCG prominently on their website (internal or external) and create a permanent page somewhere. In return, WCG will list you on the partner page, and give you all the help you need setting up 150 computers.
UserFriendly.Org is a partner. We maybe do a little more than most partners - in addition to the original announcement and the required page, UF frequently posts WCG news items right on the front page where half a million people see it every day, a small banner ad on most pages, and a whole dedicated team website with original UF artwork, hosted on the userfriendly.org domain. If you, too, want to make something like that happen, you are going to have to work closely with WCG and your own school administration. Sometimes it's like pushing water uphill, but the rewards are great. Good luck! |

Ooh, the WCG site on UF is very well done.
As far as ads all over, that is a no-go, however putting a link to a WCG page and posting information on the school site seems doable. If the school gets another server, a site such as wcg.userfriendly.org will be much more feasible. If I get this rolling, we'll start small and move up! Thanks for the support. When should I expect the information I requested to show up in my email? |

You'll get a response from a human, so it may take a day or two.
Thanks for the compliments. I could never have done it without the amazing support from UF and my teammates. |
