When I started using 'the net' you had to have a security clearance. Online time was paid by the minute, 100 baud was a fast connection.... storage space was very expensive & scarce, anyone who posted using complete words or sentences instead of the accepted shorthand was ostracized. When it was opened to the public, it started going downhill...to it's current state of debauchery! .... I know... the good old days... converting files into fuzzy black and white pictures and look in awe... browsers were science fiction and now ... now we get spammed with dolby surround stereo and 3d animations.... ![]() But I just love the internet... it gives me something to do at work ![]()

Ahhh, the bad old days. I miss the whine and crackle of an acoustic modem connecting. I miss running my computer for days to download something off of usenet. I miss archiving things to tape and cd so I could make space on my 100meg hard drives. Those days are gone, but the scars remain.
----------------------------------------Within the next couple of years we should double or triple our daily results with new multicore chips becoming available. I have to wear a bib when I think about the new AMD Barcelona chips. Ok, I have to wear a bib most of the time, but that's not the point. If we continue to evangelize, we can continue to increase the number of cpu's/cpu days. I recently put an ad in my local freecycle group (where you give away things you don't want and get things others want to give away). But I fell like a fool since a couple days after I made my post, in which I recommended WCG and Grid.org, the latter decided to pull the plug. Oh well, I'll wait a few weeks and put up another post. Check freecycle.org for your local group, join and put up a post saying "Wanted: Spare CPU cycles". Give links to the WCG Boinc client and the WCG website. People who use freecycle tend to be quite frugal and are often willing to donate something that has no real value to them. The only thing that might scare them off is the idea that it's a scam of sort, so a link to a local or regional pulication that talks about WCG or distributed computing in general might also help. Go forth and preach the gospel of DC - Halleluiah!!! ![]() ![]() |
