Re: Tray Icon

Hello hat3k,
so what will you suggest? or will you make such feature?

The standard way to hide icons and user graphics is to run the client as a service. We used to have the (complicated) instructions for setting this manually with the UD client on the Unofficial World Community Grid, but that board has disappeared. The easy way is to install the BOINC client from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php and let the installer create the service.

Re: Tray Icon

It's a simple reason: you're not supposed to! Sorry, but that's the way it is.

And BOINC is our recommended client for running as a service. It's so easy to do I don't know why you won't accept this as an answer.

The UD agent was licensed from United Devices. WCG can't modify it directly, and United Devices no longer actively work on the version we have. For what you want to do, you really need to use BOINC. BOINC is better anyway, so it's not a difficult decision! :-)

Let us know if you need any help installing BOINC. Download it here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

Re: Tray Icon

If you chose the service option, then you can exit BOINC Manager, and BOINC will continue working.

If you want to make the change permanent, remove BOINC Manager from your startup menu (you can still start it from the Start menu if you need to).

If you forgot to choose the service option, then let us know - it's simple enough to go back and change it.

Happy crunching!

Re: Tray Icon

The WCG version momentarily only offers the Single User install, hence you need the official BOINC latest recommended version for windows. Download 5.8.16. Just start it up and you should arrive in a sequence shown here. At bottom of 1st screen-print is the service install option.

Your settings transfer to the new install. Since you probably used the WCG version on your first install, this project should already be attached. You only need to remove the link in the Start Up menu (Automatic Execution), to prevent the BOINC manager to load). That manager you still want handy in case you want to edit settings of the client.

Not going to bore you with how to remotely connect, nor is this the object of this exercise. That is covered in different posts on these fora. In effect you can manage and change devices settings from a single workstation, which you can also do with BOINCview (3rd party). You need to do a lot of reading to get to that level.

Have a good sunday (with some head-scratching :))

Re: Tray Icon

The WCG BOINC still runs as a service, it was just taken out of the installer to make it easier. It was a mistake, really.

Can you tell us the exact error you are getting?

Did you fill in the right username and password during the service setup? It should have shown your Windows username filled in already, and you need to put in your Windows password.

I think there may be a problem if you don't have a Windows password. It won't accept a blank password.
