i killed it a long time ago but it still shows in 'tasks' and in red 'messages'.

How long is a long time? Aborted work should be reported and removed just like work that completed properly.
If you've got some ghost work hanging around for weeks, then either do some file surgery, or reset the project. |

Strange.... the 2 places where files and tasks can be aborted is in the 'transfer' tab and the 'tasks' tab. You could suspend tasks not started yet and finish the ones that are still in progress. After they are done and uploaded, do a project reset. The tasks you suspended should return again from the server.
