BOINC 5.8 has a throttle capability. I think it's the CPU percentage at the top of each BOINC profile (default, home, school, work). Some have complained that it is not an average percentage. It will use 100% for awhile and a lower percentage for awhile.
----------------------------------------Another way of doing it is by using the Threadmaster product. This Berkeley add-on page has threadmaster's home page http://boinc.berkeley.edu/addons.php This forum has pages and pages of threads found by searching for "threadmaster", and there may be other discussion on the BOINC forum with suggested threadmaster program commands. Also check some simple things...like whether your computer has good airflow. Some are aided by elevating them on a simple metal pie rack or opening some drawers. This is a recognized problem with laptops because they are so compact. (There is a separate throttle tool available for use with the UD.EXE version)

Not sure if there is a MAC equivalent to Threadmaster which only runs on WXP and W2K.
----------------------------------------The BOINC throttle is a run and stand still as in 100% then 0%CPU use. A setting of 60% would translate to running 3 seconds, than pausing 2 seconds. On average it should reduce the temperature. WCG has asked for a much finer control like parts of seconds. Ideally it would be a millisecond level. As for MAC, everywhere i go, reports show it to run hot and made for that. No one I've seen declared to have seen adverse effects on life..... noisy for sure with the fans going full tilt.
