linux configuration

hello

I just started using boinc with linux (Kubuntu / Mint).
via synaptic I installed
boinc-client 5.4.11-1
boinc-manager 5.4.11-1
kboincspy 0.9.1-3
and now I have several configuration issues:

1) it was not really easy to find what kind of adress kboincspy needs to work: its the location of the file 'client_state.xml' which should be located at /var/lib/boinc-client

2) somehow boinc is running with the user boinc. no clue how it got this idea. how can I change that? I found nothing useful in /var/lib/boinc_client/ or /etc/boinc-client/.

3) how is the boinc client started at system-boot? is it enough to configure it in Boinc Manager / KBoincSpy 'run always'? This function stops and starts the client-process, but does it initially start it too? I don“t even know how the process started today. Perhaps the BOINC Manager started it when configuring it.

4) Do I have to use the startup via init.d? I found the file
boincctl ( Control boinc. Stop it/Start it/Restart it.) by Charles Dennett which has to be edited and run via init.d.

4a) this file asks for a BOINC_HOME with default /home/[user]/Boinc
I found no folder like that and I have no clue which folder boinc currently uses.
4b) a user has to be configured. fine, this should be me. or not? what are the pros/cons for user me vs. boinc?

5. wcgrid always creates new devices when reinstalling it. until now i have 29(!!!!) devices, while this where just 3 computers. boinc now created just another device. how can i purge that??

Re: linux configuration

BOINC should be running as user boinc. It's part of the service installation, and makes your computer more secure.

The Synaptic packages install BOINC as a service, so it will run all the time automatically. In fact, it should have dealt with all the init.d stuff for you autmatically already.

Don't worry about the extra devices. They will be hidden soon (they can't be removed).

Any questions about kboincspy are probably going to get a better answer from the kboincspy folks.
