Trying to setup Boinc on new Linux system ( Yoper Linux ). This is the first time WCG has giving 5.8.15. from its home page. The install went without a hitch. Clicking to the Boinc Manager is fine . Boinc will not connect to localhost no matter what I use. Any suggestions ?

Localhost as in 127.0.0.1. Assuming u have the Standard BOINC GUI for Linux up and running, any interesting entries in the message tab we can feed off?
----------------------------------------There was a recent issue with DHCP on Linux. Find posts with that acronym in it. Do you have in BOINC dir a "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" file with a hex number in it. Create one if you dont or replace the hex with a password you can remember. Do you have in BOINC dir a "remote_hosts.cfg" file with the IP address and machine name in it? Do you have a HOSTS file with the IP address and machine name? "127.0.0.1 localhost" should be the entry AFTER the LAN IP address if on one. ...... I hope the Linux experts are on the way after we get more info from you. cheers

With what i gave you, on my boxes I can log on with:
----------------------------------------"localhost" or "127.0.0.1" or "Computer name" as known on network, or "IP address" as known on network When i log the agent onto a remote machine, and opposed to localhost, the password is not pre-filled ***********. Than using the simplified password substituted for the 32 hex value that's there by default. I've put the same password in all the remote_hosts.cfg's The HOST.file is really called HOSTS and has no extension. Suggest to create the missing files with an ascii editor. Not there by default. It also sets you up to manage all your clients from a single machine, regardless the OS. You need to open up ports 31416 for RPC communications.

Sekerob, none of this should be required to use BOINC locally. Let's try and find the real problem....
Lenbee, is boinc running? If the boinc client fails to start, then the manager won't be able to connect to it. Where did you install it from? If your distro has Synaptic, I suggest you try that. |

You have to use top or ps. top is easiest if you expect BOINC to be working, but since it isn't, use ps instead. You are looking for boinc.exe
However, the download from WCG is very basic, and doesn't run BOINC automatically for you. My advice is to delete the whole lot, and try Synaptic. You need boinc_manager and boinc_client. If you don't have Synaptic, you can do the same thing using apt-get (but I'll have to look up the details). For me, doing it that way "just worked" - it sets up a special user account for BOINC, and runs the client automatically as a service. It's great! :-) |

Yoper Linux uses Smart Manager . This is also a release candidate 3 not a finale distro.
I'll take a look see if it supports it . |

"The Yoper Updating System: Yoper is an RPM-based distribution that uses the apt-get updating system. Our graphical updating utility is Synaptic."
----------------------------------------Sounds good to me! The only question seems to be whether BOINC is included in their repository. If not, things get complicated. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 2, 2007 6:58:49 PM] |
