Re: Install BOINC in PCLinuxOS?

Find posts with 'certificate'. WCG requires one for the client to be able to communicate with its servers. Some distribution either dont have it or have it placed in the wrong location on the dis drive.

Here's one from knreed, WCG technician: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11201#86959

Forgive me if I'm a bit slow here as this is all new to me.

I did read the link and searched "certificate" and those posts all seem to indicate I merely need to make sure that the ca-bundle.crt. file is present in the BOINC directory which it is.

I even downloaded one from the link given and put it in the BOINC directory then rebooted but still no joy.

If it's any help at all the tutorial I followed to install BOINC as a service was from here: Installing and Running the BOINC client on Unix

and I did exactly what it said to the best of my knowledge. (created a user called boinc and installed the client in /home/boinc)

When I log on as the boinc user I click on the "home" icon and see BOINC as a directory and there are a bunch of items in the home directory that appear to have been generated by boincmgr.

With my limited knowledge I looked at most and can see that it acknowledged my name and account number but I do see one folder that is called master_worldcommunitygrid.org.xml in which it says XML Parsing error if that accounts for anything.

biggrin It would probably help a lot if only I knew what it meant. blushing

Until a couple of days ago I thought "root" was something that a plant had. shock

I'm so used to windows this is quite foreign to me but then so was windows in the beginning.

So far I've learned just enough about Linux to know that ultimately having the package in the package utility be it Synaptic or some other one would make things easiest for us.

I must say that since BOINC will attach to so many different projects and Distributed Computing clearly has a large following it surprises me that someone hasn't already prepped it for a repository.

I googled around for a few differnet ways to run it as a service and since command line stuff is still somewhat daunting for me I thought the tutorial I found was the least confusing and except for having to create a seperate user for it the method does do more or less what I wanted if I can just get it to download work.

Re: Install BOINC in PCLinuxOS?

I don't know if it helps any but there is a file created (when you go through the motions of attaching to the project) called master_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml or something close to that and when I took a look in there it displays an error message as follows:
XML parsing error
fatal parsing error: error occurred while parsing element in line 50, column 17
for (i = 0; i < rannumber; i++){

Re: Install BOINC in PCLinuxOS?

That doesn't mean anything. You are trying to display it as xml, but it's really whatever junk is found at the project URL. Tag soup, in most cases.

Open it as HTML, and you'll see it's the WCG home page.

Re: Install BOINC in PCLinuxOS?

Problem solved and BOINC is running as a service crunching away.

It did end up being a "path" error as I misunderstood one of the lines in the tutorial.

I unpackaged the downloaded file which creates a BOINC directory and I put the whole thing in the /home/boinc location which is the working directory but what I needed to do was take all the files out of the BOINC directory and put them in the /home/boinc along with all the other ones that were created when I ran the boinc_client.

So for those interested the tutorial I used will get you running BOINC as a service in PClinuxOS.

This setup should more than do the trick until someone gets energetic and creates an RPM for a repository so we can do away with creating a user for boinc.

How to install BOINC as a service in Unix (Linux) systems
