I'm running the UD Windows agent on a Windows XP machine, no problems. I see the description of the BOINC client, but haven't been able to find discussion of the following, for the Windows environment:
1. What are the trade-offs of using UD vs BOINC client? 2. What would I need to do to change from one client to that other? (e.g., to change from UD to BOINC, would I uninstall UD (and if so, how?) Thanks, Dan |

Except for the HCMD Phase I running only on WCG(UD) agent, most will say that it's not a trade-off but rather a trade-up. The keyword to search for is 'migration' or 'migrate'. The www.WCGwiki.org gives a good description of the benefits moving over to BOINC. One (un)important thing that has not been updated there is, that WCG now offers graphics for all science projects, albeit slightly different in presentation.

Not sure if this is outdated but BOINC can do multicore, a little faster, support other projects (like Rosetta or SETI) while UD has better graphics and easier to use? |

I think the very point is that you can queue WUs with BOINC in contrast to WCG Agent. (That has been the main reason for me to change the agent.)
----------------------------------------Next, upload and download after finishing a WU are quicker with BOINC due to the missing benchmark routine. Further, I have more fun with BOINC because of the control features. ![]() You have not to deinstall the WCG Agent. Just install BOINC additionally. (But you should remove the UD link from the autostart folder. ![]() ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

Hello Filipe Borges,
The 'autostart' folder is very fundamental in Windows. It contains the programs that are automatically started when a user signs on. It is not named 'autostart'. It is named Startup, but it is often referred to as the Autostart subdirectory. The directory structure begins with My Computer - C (assuming you use drive C) - Documents and Settings and then shows at least 2 subdirectories. One is labeled 'All Users'. Then there will be one or more subdirectories for each User account on the computer. Each folder (I will call them the User folders) contains Start Menu - Programs - Startup. Inside Startup are links to the programs that are started automatically. The All Users Startup programs are started whenever a user signs in. The (user folder) Startup programs are started when that particular user signs in. Actually, if you look around, you will see that this structure allows each user to have an individually customized desktop. It is how Windows is organized. You can also find all the Startup folders by using Start - Search, but that can be confusing since there might be many users. Lawrence |

Each UD_mon(itor) slot registers a new device, same as at grid.org, so plz, don't come if you have 10 slots on 1 computer and the My Grid page tells u there are 10 devices in your profile. Not sure, but think each slot has copy of a the grid agent too, but certainly the science, so 10 slots creates 10 copies of everything.
----------------------------------------Opposed, BOINC machine is 1 BOINC machine however much work your buffer stores (expressed in parts of days).... and it does multi core crunching on top, if you have one of those modernistic CPU's in your cruncher. cheers
