Okay, I use Windows, and everything's going great. My friend, however, is on a MAC, and he wanted me to ask what MAC users can do, if anything.

I read somewhere that it is being considered for the new year but I think a Linux version will be implemented first with a MAC version to follow later
----------------------------------------Due to bata testing being required of the Linux version, I cannot see a MAC version materialising for a few months Regards [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 31, 2004 10:32:53 AM] |

If you click on Join Now, then look at the menu on the right and click Software Features and then Software FAQs at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/join_now/software_faqs.html , the second question says that a Linux X86 Agent will be added in 2005. Then the third question says that then Mac OS X will be ‘looked into’. Nothing is definite past Linux, but it looks as though the Mac will get an agent, probably the third one.
If you click on Projects Showcase, then on Human Proteome Folding and then Project FAQs at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/proteome_faqs.html you can read about Folding@home, a different project on a different cluster that does have agents right now for Linux and Mac OS X. It also mentions http://www.grid.org which is a well established grid that the World Community Grid is using as a model. It is also running the same Rosetta program (Human Proteome Folding Project) for the Institute for Systems Biology in cooperation with the World Community Grid. But it also has another Ligand project (for Cancer) that can use older (slower) Windows CPUs than Rosetta. |

Those of us that have been around software development for a long time have grown used to sofware being much slower to develop than we would like. I assure you that they are working on the Linux client and that it should not be tooooo much longer. So, be as patient as you can.

[Grin] Keep in mind that we are talking about Linux rather than Mac OS X. Recently we have started getting occasional comments from the staff that they have their hands full trying to do the Linux client while handling all the ongoing work required to run the grid. So, Linux is now being worked on. But do keep in mind that this is the usual startup situation. The coders are not living in an ivory-tower environment allowing them to work full time on a software development project. With a million and one other duties to accomplish, if we see it by Christmas we will owe them thanks. (Beer-over-Internet protocol is still unspecified!)
