Re: Welcome new Slashdot Users!

It is amazing how many people just joined. Im also pretty impressed that the servers withstood the onslought. I have a couple questions:

On a lark, I decided I would benchmark a few different machines in my lab at work. I read that the tool does not utilize 2-4-8 way machines. Is it "possible" to run it on a big server like that? I read of a few utilites that allow it to run extra instances, any thoughts on if that works well?

Also how long should I let it run to get a good benchmark? I was thinking two weeks of constant running on an unused box would yeild a good average. (Given that some folds can take >100 hours)

Thanks for the input. I'm actually toying with the idea of putting it on about 40 new desktops we bought at work, but won't be deploying until Feb.

Have a look at this thread for some information on multiprocessors.

Some people have recommended udtweaker but UD themselves recommend against the use of it.

The WCG software itself does benchmarking each time it sends a result and displays this information in the Device Information panel. It all depends on what your machine is doing at the time of the sending of the results (if I understand it correctly)

That would be an excellent addition to the overall project but I would make sure that (if you are not the boss) that you get permission to do this as it could lead to issues about installing "unknown" software.

Re: Welcome new Slashdot Users!

I have put the client on 5 machines at work now (I am the IT Manager, if you're not get approval first!)

Got my first problem with it today. If the system has only 256M Ram, and when you are running WGCa, MS Project will not start correctly. I believe this is due to a lack of memory.

The other machines are running fine, nobody can tell the difference (running in constant mode at low priority). Those machines are 2.5 to 3.0 GHz w/ 256M.

Keep in mind that running the client (constantly or in screen saver) will cause the CPU to run hotter than normal. This can sometimes be a problem if people get used to a cool computer and stack crap on top of the vents.

Hi Chrisst14

I dont want to sound too obvious bet have you tried increasing the size of your swap file to compensate for MS Project. because, as I recall it is quite memory hungry

Re: Welcome new Slashdot Users!

Yeah. It's not that it runs "out of memory". I believe it just doesn't have enough physical memory (many MS programs require a certain amount of physical) to get going correctly.

In the end the fact that Business Purposes comes way before Non-Profit WCG made me simply take it off that machine.

Wahoo! Well, while I was hoping that my post to Slashdot would provide some pop to our plight, this has exceeded my expectations! cool. I will point out that while we're the number 1 team in most areas (we still lag in points/time), if you aggregate all of the IBMers, we pale in comparison. Last time I counted, they had over 4,000 members (and we've just cleared the 3,000 mark). Many of them have been online 4-6 weeks longer, as well. Poking around the stats page, I also found one member who has 114 clients running, so, needless to say, s/he's jammin'.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone for piling on. I have really enjoyed watching the stats spike. I love looking at the graphs! My wife thinks I get far too much pleasure out of something like this.... Oh well.

Cheers,
