The WCG FAQ said a standard work packet would take about 4 hours on a fast machine.
So what, in about 2 hours a good deal of us slashdotters(not me though) will have finished our work packets, points increase, and we become #1 in a couple hours? |

yes, that's what I was thinking...it's actually been looking like it's taking about 20 hours, but even so...no matter what, with the amount of users that have joined...if each of them only has a computer that is idle for 6 hours a day (on average) then we will still overtake the rest in two days...that's not bad...not bad at all...those other teams better prepare for slashdot

another piece of noteworthy info: scanning reveals that about 11/12 (or so) of slashdot's users joined today, Dec 31 (UMT) - prepare for a spike in 10 hours or so. I've been running two hours and am at 20%, and there are a lot of other people out there who are in similar positions

The points on the Member Homepage is updated only periodically. The points on the Teams web page updates every 24 hours.
----------------------------------------So look for a spike tomorrow when the /. data updates...will be #1 soon!! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 31, 2004 8:55:55 AM] |

Hi Demagogue51
----------------------------------------If you have increased your storage size, it will not update your client untill you return a completed work unit at which time your profile will update to reflect your new storage size Please note: Set it to 10 GIG as you will generate more points per hour of crunching Regards [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 31, 2004 10:56:21 AM] |

Hi Tasadar
----------------------------------------Not quite accurate A Work Unit can take anything from 2 Hours to 200 Hours depending on the complexity of the folding required to complete it WCG have been tweaking and refining work units to try and get them completed more efficiently with the minimum amount of resources possible The original Rosetta Program used 75 Meg of memory to execute This has been reduced to a 25 Meg requirement I have been experiencing an average if around 30 Hours per Work Unit but it is purely pot luck as to what Work Unit you get and the time required to complete it I hope this helps to answer your question Regards [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 31, 2004 10:57:13 AM] |

I am speechless.
The Slashdot team has gone from 79 users two days ago to almost 2000 today! Great showing guys and gals! I never really realized how big our little community was. Just some quick tips that I have noticed: 1) Be patient with the client. Although you may have heard this it takes 4 hours to crunch a unit, your actual time will vary widely. It is indeed true that it may take as long as 200 hours. This is WAD. 2) Although your client will properly report your contributed points and statistics properly, the public stats only update every 24 hours. Given the time most of you joined, you will probably not see your public stats update until sometime on 01-JAN. This is also WAD. 3) Beware the MP utility as noted elsewhere. WCD will release new clients sometime in '05. Better to be producing good scientific results than to have inflated stats with no real benefit. 4) The machine rating as listed in the client improves over time it appears. If you are running a very high-end machine it may appear that you are being benchmarked improperly. After a couple workunits, it appears to become more accurate. Don't worry. Your work is still correctly utilizing your resources. 5) There have been many posts on these boards answering technical issues. It appears that WCD survived a Slashdotting yesterday, but search for answers before posting multiple threads about the same topic. The community has been relatively small and the devs are pretty responsive. Your answer may already be here. 6) There is no Linux client yet, but they are working on it. The last I saw was a 2005 release. Again, welcome all! Philanthropy is always good. Let's see if we can give those proteins a good slashdotting. ![]() |
