What is the difference between the regular windows download and the BOINC program?
I have been away from the service for a while and I am considering participating again, but do not know what the program differences are..... I DO KNOW that BOINC is a GUI program that allows multiple participation in different programs...... but what does the windows version do that makes it a separate download????? Please advise... thank you in advance for your time and help.... David |

There's BOINC and there's the UD download. The Windows logo (on the download page) will download the "WorldCommunityGridAgent.exe" which is the UD (United Devices) agent. It is nowhere near as robust or up-to-date as BOINC, and can only be used for the World Community Grid projects.
----------------------------------------The BOINC logo will download BOINC, and there's no special World Community version of BOINC. This is the one from Berkeley, which you can download from their site as well. [Edit 1 times, last edit by schepers at Mar 14, 2007 4:35:27 PM] |

Hi David. Glad to see you are getting back with WCG
---------------------------------------- I think that David Autumns page will help you : http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/ Personally I think BOINC is better and glad I switched from UD agent. If you still need more info just ask. Diana G. ![]() |

BOINC gives you much better control over when your computer crunches and when it can use your network. If you are not continuously connected to the internet, you can download a couple days worth of work to keep yout computer busy until the next time internet access is available.
----------------------------------------Another big bonus is it's ability to run multiple threads on multi-core machines, effectively doubling(dual core) or quadrupling(quad core) your output compared to UD. ![]() |

Is BOINC using the network all the time? If yes, what is it doing?
I just installed it and ZoneAlarm is indicating continuos traffic. Nothing else is running. |

Hello Titgoutte,
Once a second the BOINC processes communicate with each other using inter-process calls. (I think it is called RPC) Zone Alarm blinks once a second to show that 2 programs are communicating. They are not using the Internet. Lawrence |
