Did it work before? Have you recently upgraded your system to Vista?
Did you reinstall BOINC after installing Vista? Is Vista blocking communications? |

I installed an older version of BOINC after upgrading to Vista. It didn't work very well. I emailed tech support and they suggested installing this version, so I did.
At first, it seemed to work very well, completing the 2 tasks that were left over from the previous version. Right now it needs to report back the results of the 2 completed tasks, but doens't seems to be able to connect to the server. |

Take a look in your Boinc directory, probably c:\program file\boinc. See if ca-bundle.crt exists. If it does exist, check if the date is 1/15/2007 or newer. If ca-bundle.crt does not exist, or if the file date is older than 1/15/2007 then download the current version from here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/boinc/curl/ Download ca-bundle.crt to your Boinc program directory. Again, probably c:\program files\boinc. Boinc should read the new ca-bundle.crt the next time it tries to communicate with the project servers. If you want to be sure Boinc reads the new ca-bundle.crt, cycle Boinc (stop, start). I've had to manually get ca-bundle.crt on all my Boinc v5.8.11 installations. |

Now this is getting weird.
I installed 5.8.15 and it immediately started to work. Then I shutdown for the night and turned it on again today. I'm getting the same fopen error again. Does Windows Vista have a bug in it's firewall or Windows Defender? I don't really want to reinstall BOINC every time I shutdown my PC ![]() |

Hello eddyxwu,
This is an error that has been reported several times in Vista OS. One member claimed that a cure was possible by changing some settings, but I am unfamiliar with Vista and cannot endorse changing the default settings, which might have undesirable side effects. The easy solution is to reinstall the client in a different partition rather than in Program Files. It is a kludge, but it seems to work. Program Files has some special protection that interferes with the client. Lawrence |

OK, I'm going to re-install BOINC to another drive at a later date.
Right now I found a workaround: login to the Admin account created when installing Vista and keep it logged in, then BOINC runs without a hitch. I can switch to other users and it'll still run. However, the moment I logout of the Admin account, BOINC dies. I think BOINC needs to work better with Vista's UAC, that's all. |

Beware of .0 releases from MS |
