That black rectangular object at the bottom right of the pile of stuff is the radiator that'll be keeping the CPU + GPU cool  Very environmentally friendly, crunch cures and heat your home at the same time. |

One thing I didn't spot though was the graphics card? Is it intended to be a pure crunching monster that won't need one?

One thing I didn't spot though was the graphics card? Is it intended to be a pure crunching monster that won't need one? ATI HD 5870. It won't be used by WCG, unless they have some GPU computing capability in the future (there isn't any currently, right?) So, mainly for gaming  |

Incidentally everyone, apparently if you have a 64-bit OS and a 64-bit machine, then installing the 64-bit version of Boinc means you get a ~10% increase in performance/points per day.
----------------------------------------I've not confirmed this myself yet, but I've just switched over to the 64-bit Boinc binary and I'll see if it makes a difference. I certainly have seen a huge boost in Dhrystone benchmark performance when I run the BOINC CPU benchmarks in the 64-bit version. Though it's supposed to be averaged out in some clever way by WCG so that a given amount of work gets the same no of points regardless of machine performance or O/S. |

How's the build going Fraz? I know you said you were busy, but I'm also pretty sure that you'll have already been tempted into starting joining some the bits up. So how far have you got? And have you hit any unexpected snags?

And have you hit any unexpected snags? You guessed correctly... I couldn't resist. Current state of play is this:  So basically I've got all the water cooling bits in, filled and tested the loop - no leaks so far! No unexpected snags yet really, except the compression fittings for the water cooling were too broad to fit on the graphics card block properly. Fortunately the CPU water block came with a couple of barbs which went on just fine, so I used them instead. I'll try and put in the rest of the components over the next few days. There's going to be lots of fiddly cable routing, although the case I've bought is really nice in that respect, as the cables can all be routed behind the motherboard backplane via those rubber grommets. Nonetheless, I've still got a lot of wires to deal with - especially w.r.t. controlling all the fans. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 8, 2010 9:54:09 PM] |

It's looking good so far. I suspect you'll spend more time on tweaking the overclocking and cooling for maximum performance than it'll actually take you to finish putting the rest of the bits in.
Personally I'd be slightly worried about having the 240 volt power supply in the bottom of a case if I were using water cooling because of what might happen if there ever was a leak.  |
