I'd like to know how are selected which projects are send?I have selected all projects but it seems to me that I am working much more for some projects (Genome Comparison or FAAH) than others. |

There already quite a few answers on the forum about that. Here a variation to add with extreme simplification, which is based on the work available for any of the Operating Systems (OS) of Any of the Projects at Any one time. In the example taking OS X and All project option and assuming a series of 100 work units send to a client 1 by 1 or in batches it would go out like this:
----------------------------------------Project, Available, Alloc If u would choose FA@H in combination with HDC, u would get about 83 FA@H and 17 of HDC, but if HDC runs out, only FA@H. It gets hugely more complicated because if u select e.g. GC and HDC only, they are deducted from the pool above, thus shifting the distribution. If the HDC only crunchers have used up the 80,000, it will be replaced by something else from the pool, if the alternate work option for BOINC was selected. UD would just stop, which is why it's recommended to have a second or third project for both agents. Chances of idling than are very very slim, bar technical glitches like last Thursday on a BOINC server. The technicians tweak the balance at times manually for reasons e.g. of testing (HCMD recently) or because they need to finish a larger batch of work for a project that has fallen behind or needs to go presto pronto to the scientists. Thing is, it's all humanitarian and we're all in the Community together. PS: The duration of a work unit is not weighed in automatically for all i know at this time. Thus the distribution will remain 83 FA@H regardless if they are 6 or 8 hours a piece. One other reason why the technicians need to steer it like a ship and refine the plotting.

Thanks for the answer. That would be interesting to have stats on how much workload is available for each project.
It would be nice also to be able to put a weight/priority users want to put on project. That would allow the selection of several project and give opportunity to help more a project we want to be more involved. In any case, every project will benefit to everyone. |

Within BOINC whilst attached to different DC's, the weight is already controllable. Within WCG the idea has been proposed before by members..... I doubt it will happen, but we keep it on the wish-list..... for now if u want to especially contribute, take the pick from 5 presently running on UD agent and 4 on BOINC **.
----------------------------------------Seeing the available workload (those would not be stats) is also on the wish-list, but like u say "it would be nice". You already can see by-science data for work done here, clicking thru to the projects and under the links in my sig. cheers ** Added: If selecting specific projects and ticking the 'alternate work' option in the active of 4 standard BOINC profiles, the program will retrieve backup work in case the projects of choice temporarily or permanently run out of work.

It appears that the web site has got some minor changes lately (last week?). Specifically, Result Status has now been elevated to main menu level rather than being a sub menu under Device manager, which is good.
However, the menu item "My Projects" appears to be creating some confusion (at least in my mind). As I understand it, both BOINC and UD currently allow specifying projects to run based on the profile settings to which a device is attached ("default" profile by default). So it is not apparent to me exactly what role does the settings under "My Projects" play in this. Maybe this is also creating confusion to other BOINC participants. May I suggest that "My Projects" menu be abandoned, since the profile settings take precedence anyway? Am I understanding this correctly? |

'My Projects' feeds into the default profiles and is used to globally steer all devices UD & BOINC with a (still) unspecified profile selection. It's populated from the first of the 3 new enrolment pages that have been in place since the beginning of 2007. Changing the My Projects in effect is a higher level control applying to BOINC & UD simultaneously, but also shows what one picked during the enrolment process.
----------------------------------------Personally i'd vote for moving the Device Statistics to My Statistics sub menu and do a bit of renaming and who knows will we see the light one day on a My Projects Statistic too. Time for some Allman Brothers.

The settings in My Projects override all your device profiles. It's a useful way to change your preferences if you are using multiple device profiles to fine tune your settings.
There is confusion, but most of it arises because WCG and BOINC have a concept of "projects", and they mean different things. It has been discussed before, but no perfect solution is in sight. I see an error on the My Projects page. It implies you can only have device-specific project settings on UD. This was true once, but has been wrong for a long, long time. I'll report it. |

I just checked the Device Profile pages for UD and BOINC. The 'Create a new device profile' page for UD had nothing checked for projects, in contrast to BOINC which had every project checked. Also, the 'Hard drive space to allocate?' had a default of only 50 MB. It used to default to 1 GB, which is much more reasonable. I think we need to change this default behavior.
