I'm also getting disk space errors even though I have 11GB free. The error I get is
2007-02-12 18:01:15 [World Community Grid] Message from server: No disk space (YOU must free 841.8 MB before BOINC gets space). Review preferences for maximum disk space used. I've tried starting up the GUI manager but it wants a password - I've tried all I can think of, and also wants to be associated with a project - again I've cut and pasted all sorts of things in here, but none seem to work. Is there a boincmgr user guide somewhere or has someone any advice?Greg (Kubuntu boinc in command line mode) |

Check which partition you have installed BOINC on.
The GUI password is in the file gui_rpc_auth.cfg - but you shouldn't need to use a password when connecting to localhost. |

but you shouldn't need to use a password when connecting to localhost. boinc is in the root partition, with 11GB to spare. I tried connecting to local host with the password the gui fills in, without a password and with the very long password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg but it will accept none of these options. Is there any other way of getting rid of this error message? Greg |

Vaguely remember someone cutting and pasting with an extra space front or back. Change the random 32 character hex to something u can recollect.

I think I might have overcome the problem in a 'try everything' sort of a way, like this:
1. Close the boinc terminal, which stops the boinc client running 2. run the manager. In my case, under KUBUNTU this means typing sudo ./run_manager in a terminal, when in the BOINC folderThe manager asks for the URL of the project, which is www.worldcommunitygrid.org. It then seems to grumble with errors but asked for my grid name and password, for which I used the original registration details with world community grid, and appeared to be linked to my project. 3. Then I reset the project - no idea what this does but it did ask me if I was really sure that I wanted to do this. 4. close the manager and restart boinc in the usual linux command line way. It is running OK at the moment - time will tell though. Conclusion - I needed to reset the project but have really fought to do this. Surely It can be made easier for users like me, who have some technical knowledge but are not experts. I've looked for a simpleton's user guide to the manager but haven't found one as yet. Greg |

Here a link to an install instruction for Linux last updated Dec.02, 2006: http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=Inst..._Client_Software_on_Linux
----------------------------------------It's part of the unofficial BOINC wiki which has topics on pretty much anything. This WCG page has more links to install assistance for Linux/Unix. http://www.spy-hill.net/~myers/help/boinc/unix.html#start The 5.8.11 version for Linux has now what is called 'the standard gui' http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php It's not been sold at time of this writing to be the one WCG promotes, but it works for most all. File (click to download) boinc_5.8.11_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh (4.21 MB) Version number 5.8.11 Release date 9 February 2007 Installer type Self-extracting archive New features * New CPU Scheduler. * New Work Fetch Policy. * CPU Capability detection. * Revamped logging solution. * Improved security for POSIX compliant systems (only implemented for the Mac) * Add support for file compression on upload. * BOINC Simple GUI. * Added memory usage limits for BOINC applications. (Check preferences for new settings) * Boincmgr requires GTK++2.0 or higher, which is included in most Linux distributions. Its been tested on: o Fedora Core 5 o SUSE 10.1 o Ubuntu 6.06

Resetting the project deletes all the project specific files. In theory, it should produce the same effect as detaching then reattaching to a project, but in practice doing that may leave some old files lying around (I haven't tested this recently, so I could be wrong).
For most Linuxes, I strongly recommend you use the port system and have it all installed automatically. The install will sort out the permission issues, and create a user that BOINC runs as, minimising security issues. It also sets up BOINC to run as a service, so it automatically starts up with your computer. You can then run BOINC Manager or boinc_cmd to manage it while it is running. In the next BOINC release, it is hoped that the installation will be better designed, and that all users will be directed to the best installation script - the default script provided by Berkeley is very basic and really not sufficient. |

Thanks for all the advice. Even though I deleted the boinc directory and started again, I ended up with the same error. Have now downloaded boinc 5.8.11 as suggested, which seems to be working better but time will tell. Must get back to the day job though.
This reminds me a bit of the two great lies of humanitarian work that I heard lately. 1. It will only take 2 weeks 2. It will be perfectly safe! Greg PS, thanks also for the advice I strongly recommend you use the port system and have it all installed automatically. but as I've no idea what that means I'll just have to start the project whenever I restart the computer but as that is rarely, that might not be a problem. (Note to PIV users, mine only uses 32 Watts most of the time so hopefully my help with world community grid doesn't add too much to global warming. Fight cancer or Floods - interesting choice!) |

This message showed up at BOINC Dev, that could explain the error-ing of for instance faah.
----------------------------------------The new boinc client for linux version 5.8.11 has been released. This contains a bugfix for the stack limit problem that caused all the results crunched by the 5.8.8 client to crash. We discovered that there was some information for the processor model missing yesterday which has been fixed by the boinc devs and will be incorporated in the next client release. Please upgrade to 5.8.11 or higher if you can. This will help us a lot with the HR issue.
