I notice the UD throttle setting has changed on some of my PC's from 100% to the default 60%. I can only think this has happened since they started receiving HCMD work units. I presume the throttle setting will apply across all projects?
I don't want WCG to change my throttle settings without telling me. Is there any way I can prevent this in future? Thanks, David. |

Well actually WCG changed the default for all UD projects to 60% quite some months ago (mid 2006) and made an announcement . At that time WCG created a tool to allow members to bring it up to the level they want. See here in Start Here:
----------------------------------------The throttle is controlled by the software send for each UD project and not controlled by a setting in a UD Device profile. The software only downloads once for each new project or when there is a revision change.

Hi Sekerob,
Yes I know the default was changed to 60% some months ago, but I have used the throttle tool to set mine to 100%. Now it has changed to 60%. Does this mean that each time a new project is launched I have to intervene and set the throttle back to 100%? David. |

Actually, now i realize what u said in your first post. More people are reporting that the Throttle percent is not being used. Tested it on one machine. Indeed, if using the throttle tool it goes back to default 60 actual (around 25-30% on a dual core). The Graphics screen and the registry value report the Tool %. Alther is aware.....here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=11503
----------------------------------------I used the Environment Variable in past but nowadays totally hooked on Threadmaster as it can control any app u want it to. Sorry for misunderstanding. cheers

To summarize that what has been confirmed by the technicians:
----------------------------------------1. Genome Comparison had a version change to 1.0.0.9. The reason of the upgrade was to reduce disk I/O. This one does not listen to the throttle instruction and is retracted to bring back 1.0.0.8 until the throttle part is fixed. 2. Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy. Does not listen to the Throttle Tool instruction. New version is being examined on the 'test grid'. Meantime the weight was put higher so more work is going out for this project. Feb.01 there were 8,000 WU's processed successfully. 3. Human Proteome Folding - Phase II. Works well, long as not run simultaneous on the same CPU thread as another process on same low priority like Grid Republic or BOINC. If that's done, HPF2/UD agent is starved of CPU cycles grinding progress to near halt. No solution has been found so far. The issues are with UD(WCG) Agent only.

Currently my PC is running "Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy" without listening to throttle setting. Actually I have set the UD to work at 30% all the time.
Because of 100% use of processor I will have to stop the UD until this bug is fixed. Can someone send a letter to all community members when the problem is fixed and how to upgrade to the new version? |

WCG does not send letters on problem resolution. Problems are resolved quickly and daily which would lead to an avalanche of messages.
----------------------------------------The way to go forward at this time IF NOT WANTING to run at 100% is: A. Deselect Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy and Genome Comparison in the device profile. Also the heavy Help Cure Cancer. B. Go to Taskmanager, while UD agent is running and terminate the wcgridHCMD.exe. This will fetch other work. The processes for GC & MCMD projects are so small and light that even at 100% they should be unobtrusive. 100% IDLE PROCESSING TIME used to be the default until middle 2006 with very very few complaints about performance impact on the larger jobs. As soon as one does something, UD agent backs off. U can even program it to only run as screensaver or at night or any timeframe of the day. thanks for your understanding.

Thank You Sirs for Throttling back during this Global Warming [as I posted 9 months ago] and I pump up my PC's this mild winter to get more heat. Y'all need to keep on 'Crunchin''

On point 1, a new version is released shortly and point 2 resolution following later. If and when new versions numbers become know, they will be included in a summary held on the Start Here: Community-maintained FAQs [read only] forum.
