I've just recently installed the grid agent on my Dell GX280 P4 PC and noticed that it was using 100% CPU instead of the normal 60%. To try to remedy this, I used the CPU throttling application to set the maximum CPU usage to 25%, but still the agent uses 100% while running.
Is there something else I need to do? Thanks |

Have u tried at e.g. 50%? Anyway, i dont use the throttle tool, rather the System Level environment variable WCGRID_MAX_CPU set at any percent u like. U need to restart UD agent for it to take effect. This setting is for all projects, but is overruled by a registry entry made by the Throttle Tool. To get rid of it fire up the tool and select 'default value'.

Ok, thanks for the tip. I'll try the environment variable and see if that does the trick. I've just been reading that the client will try to use any free cycles, up to 100% which would be ok, except that I need to run the client at a lower speed because it's fan ramps up at 100% to cope.
Thanks again. |

Nope, still no luck. I set the environment variable and rebooted, but it seems to have had no effect. Any other ideas?

Find a registry key with a name like "CPU Throttle". There are several, which all need deleting.
----------------------------------------I'll report it anyway as its odd and just tried it on a C2D to no effect. 25%, or any % takes 100% of one core. Does the Graphics window in the Agent report the adjusted %? Mine does. Which project is it running? Just finished HPF2 and the same showing on a HCMD. The Key in the Registry definitely has the percent selected with the tool. "Risorse del computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IBM\World Community Grid" Use Threadmaster or BES (never tested latter). It overrules all WCG throttle settings. On the P4 it does a great smooth job to keep it 'cool' at the desired %.

Thanks What grid application is running? Some apps have pieces of code that aren't throttled. e.g. the beginning of Fight AIDS is unthrottled. This piece of code only runs for a few minutes at most. Also, when the agent does performance benchmarks, it will use 100% CPU. Finally, after setting it, is the throttle setting properly displayed on the graphics screen?
