Behind the Download Now button

Not sure if this is new with the recent website changes re registration but want to clarify this in my own mind so I can present it to some folks/groups that I'm trying to get to sign up with WCG as crunchers/partners. If you're already registered (you're logged in with some username), when you click the button, it skips the registering and goes straight to downloading the agent. It appears to make a decision on some basis whether to point you to the UD agent or BOINC. Is that correct? So would someone wth a machine that is powerful enough to run either get steered to BOINC? What should a newly registered user with a recently new machine expect?

No, the new download screen gives equal weight to UD, BOINC for Mac, BOINC for Linux and BOINC for Windows.

It may choose one by default, but as far as I know, if you run Windows, UD will be selected by default.

Ouch. Okay. I wanted to avoid "playing around" with setting up another username that wouldn't be used but it sounds like I'll want to do some steering thru the process as I try to get new crunchers signed up. So, I'll have to see what can be expected and how best to direct. Oh well. Thanks.

Yes, it can't be coerced. I'll put in a feature request.

Re: Behind the Download Now button

keithhenry,

As mentioned, we do a platform detection and select UD for Windows users by default.

As far as helping people register for BOINC, the only direction you should have to give is to tell them to select BOINC for Windows instead of the default Windows download. The rest of the registration process is the same (installation process is different, of course, but should be the same for all your friends if they all choose BOINC).

As for bypassing the registration page, that only happens if you're already logged in. You can try logging out and hitting the Download Now button to see what a new user would see. Then you can click the link by "Already a member?" to log in and get to the download page. That is essentially the same as a new user filling out the form and clicking continue.
