I was looking at my computer to find out how much memory I have and see that I don't have the 512 that supposedly was in my machine when I bought it new Jan. '05. It says I have only 384. Does anyone know why this would be so?
----------------------------------------I have never run the HDC on my machine, and I know it's because of the low memory which is fine...but while I was looking at how my computer stands in comparision to the requirements of HDC that's how I noticed. Funny to have seen the 384 on my main page of UD for memory and just never paid attention that I should have 512 there. Really I couldn't say if that 384 has been there from the beginning of my crunching or not. I recently downloaded the add-on to increase my CPU throttle to 100% and what a difference in the number of WU I have been able to get done. Now, if i can find out where my memory has gone, I am sure I can get lots more done! My info is: Compaq Presario Win. XP ver. 2002 SP2 AMD Sempron proc. 3100+ 1.81 GHz 384 MB Ram My UD device: Agent Version: 3.0 (2844) Device Name: DS Device ID: 119285 I can tell you that the less memory was there *before* I downloaded that add-on, so it is not from that. I apprieciate your help! Thank you, Diana ![]() ![]() |

You need to goto start-all programs-accessories-system tools-system information and see what it shows for memory. Windows XP really needs 1 gb memory to run half way decent. 2 gb would be alot better though. The AMD semprom chip is kind of a slow chip (comparable to a intel celeron) but works ok for general tasks. If you can, I would recommend 2 gb so it can crunch better.

Thanks Bearcat for your fast reply.
----------------------------------------I am looking right now where you suggested, and it looks totally different than I described... lol Okay it shows: Total physical memory: 512 MB Avail. Physical memory 55.36 MB Total Virtual memory 2.00 GB Avail. Virtual memory 1.96 GB Page File Space 1,016.53 MB So I still have all the memory I started with....maybe I'm just not using it properly? I am going to look into getting more memory added in my computer to be able to crunch HDC, but in the meantime I shouldn't worry? Thanks so much and I apologize for not posting this in the UD support to begin with. Bless you! ![]() |

Does your motherboard have onboard video? If so it will dedicate a portion of the RAM to video processing. If you have a dedicated PCI or PCI-E graphics card then something else is going on.

Diane, welcome to WCG,
----------------------------------------if u see 384 on the Main screen of the UD agent, after selecting the memory info box, is it behind the 'Comparison Device' or ' This Device' (Yours)? If the answer is the first and 512 behind 'This Device', you are fine. asfor memory needs, visit the Systems Requirement page. Only Help Defeat Cancer is memory hungry. If WCG sees your machine does not have enough memory available, it wont send work of any project that exceeds your machines specification. cheers

Hi Sekerob.
----------------------------------------The 384 is in both places: the 'comparison device' and 'this device'. That's why I always wondered why i would have the same since my computer has 512. I am a numbers junkie and for me to have a lower overall number because of my RAM missing 128 MB kinda burns a bit. I don't know what this means, but I will get to the bottom of this I have been a lurker for quite some time and have read and read and read all of the great posts and explanations and have never had any questions or needs before, so thank you for taking the time to help me. All of you people are awesome! Diana ![]() |

It's a new one as UD generally reports all physical Ram.... looked at another forum that uses UD, but nothing there i could see.
----------------------------------------Let me ask another one: What's the memory rating saying.... 100? On my box it says 300 for 1.5gb In the BIOS there are some options to allocate ram for certain functions like video and rom 'shadowing' and values like 64 and 128. UD might be aware of those. If u go in, be careful not to change anything, but if u see 1 with 128, try changing it to 64 and see what UD reports after. running 'systeminfo' from the DOS prompt window, will also provide more information. stumped.

Sekerob, would the 384 mb ram showing on her computer be what is left to use for the UD? Her only having 512 on win xp is choking her computer and doesn't have much to play with. With her probably having shared video memory, that allotment would probably not show up in her stats.
