Don't know... take it step by step. It's never been reported before that 128 was missing from the UD agent.
----------------------------------------Diana could install BOINC to find out if another grid app would identify 512 or 384.

Hi. I have talked with my friend about this and they said the same about the video card using 128 MB. I am going to find out what RAM I have and get more of it.
----------------------------------------About BOINC, I did have that before for SETI and then I didn't know how to add WCG to it so I downloaded UD agent. Then I got frustrated with all the server downtime over the years and deleted it last year. Maybe I'll check into BOINC again and see how it goes. I'll look into it. Thanks for everything! There are 2 simple solutions which don't cost too much.
----------------------------------------Either ... get a 128 Mb or 256Mb graphics card (There are different kinds depending on what kind of slot it uses, usually PCI or AGP). The main memory will be restored to being 512 Mb. and/or/both get another stick of memory, 512mb or 1Gb. That also has need to be matched as to type and speed of memory that is already in there. Don't expect to upgrade to Windows Vista after hearing all of the hype this year. It needs at least 2 Gb to work well and a fairly large computer. My existing computers will stay with Windows XP. One of the local computer stores (not the national chains) or somebody like geeks-R-us can probably help. pssst: even a small Pentium III/500MHz computer is contributing here by running Genome Comparison on BOINC. There is a lot less babysitting than with the UD.EXE agent.

Hi retsof. Thank you for your suggestions. I have a guy at work who would look at my computer and tell me what I have and what I need...he is a 'geek' and he told me to bring in my tower and he'll take a look. Now I understand why so many people build their own computer.
----------------------------------------I also am not upgrading to Vista as I heard the same about the increased requirements to run it. Another guy at work had to go for training on it as my store I work at will be selling it. Thanks for all your help. Diana ![]() |

I have switched over to BOINC and it shows 384 RAM as well. It must be the video card. Tax refund will go to improve my computer LOL Thanks for everything. Diana ![]() ![]() |

Diana G,
----------------------------------------found an older post to quote: Re: UD Agent problem in XP ltd accounts It sees the available memory. This is what is reported in System Properties (right-click My Computer, click Properties) and is indeed installed RAM minus shared video RAM. Also another post confirmed that UD would see the available ram as that less the video allocation, which leaves the obscure question why the system panel is not reporting this. en fin, you've closed in on the source..... get a 512 stick and switch to BOINC permanently.... attach to project www.worldcommunitygrid.org , existing member, member name / password and away u go (but check your My Grid, My Profile first - if not already done - to see if u have a BOINC account set up at WCG). This agent is much more efficient with RAM and i/o. cheers cheers

Hello Diana G,
I bought a 512-MB computer back in 2005 and was surprised to discover that it dedicated 128 MB to Video, leaving me with 384 MB for computing. The advertisements just don't mention that. I added another 512 MB as a cheap upgrade. Actually, 256 MB is enough to let Windows XP run at full speed under light usage (email, word-processing). But for our monster scientific programs, 384 MB is a bit small. That is just big enough to let FAAH run at full speed while using a web browser, but more memory is useful for the larger programs that WCG runs. I suggest that you look at the 'Useful Utilities' thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 and download Belarc Advisor ( http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html ). This is the simplest system diagnostic program and is quite helpful and informative about your system. Hope this helps, Lawrence |

----------------------------------------I have indeed switched permently over to BOINC. It was a tad bit sad to delete UD agent after almost 2 yrs, but hey I got over it quickly. Have an awesome day!! Diana ![]() |
