Device Manager options

Is there anywhere that says what the Device Manager options really do and whether/how they are implemented?

eg. No matter what I set "Use no more than: X % of processor time" to, the WCG projects appear to sit at 100% CPU usage all the time.

It would be good to know which (if any) of the options are implemented and, if so, in what circumstances.

Re: Device Manager options

That option is only implemented on the 5.8 BOINC client. It hasn't been released yet.

What about the rest of the options?

Re: Device Manager options

From the many bookmarks made during searches for the holy grail: Preferences in the BOINC System The names are not necessarily the same, but it requires little fantasy to match them up with the names on the profile pages.

Re: Device Manager options

That site is not responding at all. It can be pinged, so it looks like its web server is dead.

Anyhow, it seems like a lot of work for an ordinary user. Whatever useful information there is about BOINC preferences should be on, or linked from, the Device Manager page.

Re: Device Manager options

Okay, a more comprehensive answer:

Do work only between the hours of: - and -
Connect to the Internet only between: - and -
Use no more than: -% of processor time (requires BOINC 5.8)
Use no more than: -% of total memory (requires BOINC 5.8)
Processor Usage
Do work while computer is in use?
Do work only after computer is idle for: - minutes
Do work while computer is running on batteries?
On multiprocessors, at most use: - processors (recommend 1 on hyperthreaded computers, 2 on dual core computers)
Project Weight:
Switch between applications every: - minutes (recommend 6-12 hours [360 minutes])
Disk and Memory Usage
Use no more than: - Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least: - Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: -% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: - seconds
Leave applications in memory while preempted?
Network Usage
Confirm before connecting to Internet?
Disconnect when done?
Connect to network about every - days (recommended 0.1 - 0.5 days)
Maximum upload rate: - Kbytes/sec (broken in 5.4 and some other versions. Should be fixed in 5.8)
Maximum download rate: - Kbytes/sec (as above)

All other options should work as described. Some options are ignored depending on other settings, but those should be fairly obvious. The recommendations are my own. All other settings work well with the default values.

Re: Device Manager options

Have been running since sometime in 2004. After some months offline due to a corrupted registry, find I now have 3 "Installed Devices", the first two named something unlikely. the last the one have have always used (Optimum Effeciency). The second install was after a software corruption after an "upgrade" to the WCG; then `puter went bad. Just recently installed after a painful disk format and reinstall of most of the software had been using (backup device failed - lost ten years of email ad nauseum.

A thoughtful letter of inquiry from WCG reminded me to reinstall.

Have always been set to give 10gb of disk space and run 24/7.
Selected the Proteom Folding project, which had run in past.

Am 64, homebound, and derive great pleasure from the endeavour.

Are those installations set in stone (sounds petty to ask, now).

Re: Device Manager options

Hi CarlosG,
Are those installations set in stone

An installation (for UD) is a unique device ID assigned by the server during the installation. They never go away, but after 2 weeks without returning a result they drop out of sight, unless you use the drop-down menu to look at them.
