I know that you can set the "task priority" to almost any level you want to (be very careful with "real time"!!) in the Task Manager by right-clicking on "WCGrid_Rosetta", and then setting a priority, but it's only good for that one "work unit." Once another molecule downloads, it defaults to LOW again.
Is there a way to set it permanently? (I have a dedicated device for this, and it might just as well be crunching as quickly as it can.) Thanks, JJ |

Hi JJ
----------------------------------------Rick Alther from Admin wrote quite a lot about this subject if you care to browse the forum as I think it was listed as CPU USAGE You can use the search box at the top of the screen to find answers to this post as I am sure it has been addressed before I will try and track down the post and advise you Regards <GRAHAM> [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 25, 2004 5:31:37 PM] |

Thanks, JJ The short answer is no, you can't. The long answer is that you could if you wrote a program to watch for this process and dynamically alter it's priority. It's not really worth it though. If you have a dedicated machine, it's already using just about as much CPU time as it can. The most you would be gaining is likely only a few seconds over the course of a workunit at the expense of your system becoming utterly unusable. As graham has mentioned, I've gone into the details of Windows priorities a few times already on these forums. Also, setting Rosetta to any other priority level other than Realtime has no effect. It will always have a priority level of 1. Setting it to Realtime is NOT recommended because of the problems listed above (in essence, your machine will be unusable).

i suppose this means that its not really possible to run SETI or another grid project at the same time without owning 2 or more computers, personally if someone wrote the windows software to do this id be interested .registry mechanic it seems would add sum sort of flaw.
hears to hoping its merely a matter of time before that software becomes redily availible. |

You can run SETI on the same computer, but it will override WCG since it runs at a higher priority. This is answered in our Software FAQ.
