Why not do more then just crunch?

I got to thinking this is supposely a humanitarian effort. I seen a St. Jude children's hospital commercial for fighting childhood cancer. They were asking for donations to help out with the cause.

Could the WCG ever colloborate with such places and collect donations? Would this get the WCG name out there and get more volunteers interested and grow the grid?

It just seems like there is more that could be done for the benefit of humanity in the here and now until better treatments or possible cures can be found. I don't think $5, $10 even $25 a month is going to blow a hole in most people's bank accounts. I wouldn't even notice that amount missing each month. My cell phone bill alone is $70.

What does anyone else think about this concept? Is this even a realistic thought? If so it would need some formal verification of how and where the money is going and what it is doing. I personally don't believe in donations to line pockets.

I believe if all the right moves are done at the right time for the right reasons the grid call grow exponentially in a few years.

Re: Why not do more then just crunch?

Hello rbolo29,
Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy is a project being run (in part) by a charitable group supported by donations. We are a 'back-room' operation supporting such organizations, when they have a need for a computer grid. We hope that eventually people who give to charity will also become accustomed to donating time on their computers for benevolent causes.

st. judes is a good organization, beyond question!

however, i do not want to see grid computing mixed up with fund raising, at all. way too many issues come up.

That's one reason why I started this direct crunching for results.

Sending funds can sometimes only give you more letters wanting more finds.

Re: Why not do more then just crunch?

While we don't collaborate with organizations monetarily (as halfcard pointed out, that brings up too many messy issues), we do collaborate in two distinct ways:

1) Organizations that run a project on our grid gets lots of free computer time. It doesn't cost them anything. That's our donation.

2) We collaborate with organizations through our partner program . This benefits both World Community Grid and the partnering organization. As of the time of this post, there are 289 partners.

There are many ways to contribute to your favorite cause besides money. World Community Grid is just one of many! smile
