I'm having this problem with UD Windows that's driving me crazy.
I have 4 WinXP Pro machines that successfully execute work units but fail to download the the next work unit, or stall with the next work unit. The grid agent looks like it's stalled with no description of the work unit and showing no task executing, or when the next work unit is downloaded, the task execution is stalled at 1 sec. This problem does not look like it is project specific as I've tried cycling through different projects by turning 1 off etc. Normally to restart WCG I'll kill the UD.exe process and restart WCG which works successfully, but having to do this manually means I have to continually check these machines. I would describe this problem as intermittent as these PC's will be OK for 2-3 days then the problems reoccur sporadically across these PC's. I have 4 other PC's running WCG-WinXP that are not as severely affected by this issue. Doesn't seem to be AMD or Intel specific - all PC's running latest XP patches, latest Trend-Micro antivirus. Running version WCG 5.1.2 I've checked the forums and FAQ's and don't see anything obvious for this issue. Any suggestions? |

Hi Damaxmax,
It is the 'intermittent' nature of your problem that leaves me floundering. I used to lose my Internet connection every few hours when I switched to ZoneAlarm firewall because of a setting issue, but everything else I have run into was consistent. Try this on one of your problem machines. Remove the UD icon from Startup, reboot, then install Windows BOINC ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewDownload.do?platform=all ). (If you are installing on a Pentium 4, specify just 1 thread unless you do not mind doubling memory usage when hyperthreading is detected.) BOINC maintains a Message Log that might reveal the problem. Lawrence |

Hi Lawrence,
I've just installed the Win Boinc agent on one of my problem machines and will give it a try, checking Message Log if and when the problem occurs again. I had previously uninstalled all firewall software so I am only running WinXP Pro firewall to eliminate the most likely cause. Even when running firewall software I never lost my internet connection. Thanx Dave |

Hi,
I am having a similar problem with one of my servers running WCG. It is an Athlon 64 Core X2 system with a couple of Gig of memory. I recently installed Vista Release Candidate 1 on the system and now I have to reinstall WCG every time I reboot or it fails. All I get is a message Unable to Process Task data Backing-off". As long as I don't reboot it seems to be working okay. I can force it to download another project, but I still gt the message above when it tries to start processing. I thought it might be Vista, so I reinstalled WCG in my Windows XP boot and it does the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas?? thanks, Phil |

Try BOINC. Since you have a dual core system, you can take advantage of the two cores if you use BOINC. |
