[HCMD again] Low %Cpu usage ?

Hello again :)

(i did post all this before, but the post went to another dimension, all is lost, i ll try to be quick)

While running WCGA/HCMD on my P4C 2.6Ghz ( Epox I875p / 2*512 Corsair / WXPPro SP2) the WCGridHCMD.exe seems not to be able to "eat" more than 33% of his virtual half (HyperThreading is on)

Boinc doesnt have this kind of problem, it takes a full 50%

Thanks for all help / ideas / experience you can share with me :)

Re: [HCMD again] Low %Cpu usage ?

As I mentioned in my other reply to you, the United Devices program is throttled to 60%. This is reported as 30% because you have hyperthreading (but that's not an accurate figure - hyperthreading doesn't double your speed).

You can use the throttle tool to change the throttle to 100% (it will be reported as 50%) or use BOINC. You can even run two processes at once with BOINC, using all 100% of your capacity.

Here is the UD Throttle Tool ( http://worldcommunitygrid.org/files/WCGridMaxCPU.exe ). As explained at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2683#61655 , just set it to 'User Defined' and select 100%. Currently you are running one thread at the default 60% setting.

Re: [HCMD again] Low %Cpu usage ?

Thanks both for the quick help :) that s exactly what i needed :)

The point of all this is that HCMD (as current phase) wont run (well at least for now, i didnt see anything going in this direction) with BOINC.

I red that phase2 will (which to me doesnt make too much sense, as it will make phase1 longer, i dont know of any way to run wcga under linux/free OS)

that s far too much () in a post, my apologizes :)

thanks again ; )

Re: [HCMD again] Low %Cpu usage ?

Hello flopanda,
The reason for only using the UD client for HCMD Phase 1 is speed. Several months ago knreed said that 22% of our results were run on BOINC and 78% on UD. So programming Phase 1 on UD gives the most processing power per programmer man/hour. BOINC runs on 4 platforms: Windows, Linux, Mac OS X Power and Max OS X x86. Programming for 4 more platforms would add weeks to the rollout. But the whole point of Phase 1 is to get rapid preliminary results so the scientists can spend months validating them before we start the real data run - Phase 2.
