Project Priority

Just a suggestion but I was thinking it would be nice to select priority on which project you would like to work on. I know you can check the boxes on which projects you will be willing to work on but they are dealt to boinc to what appears random. Example:

If you want to work on Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy and Help Defeat Cancer for Priority 1 and then Genome Comparison and Human Proteome Folding Priority 2 and then Fight Aids priority 3. The way it would work is it would distribute Priority 1 until those projects were unavailable then Priority 2 etc.

It would be nice for hands free operation. Again, I know I can do it manually and just select the 1 project I want to contribute but Priorities would allow for more flexibility.

Re: Project Priority

WCG balances several factors when deciding what work to send. Not all computers are powerful enough to work on all projects. Some projects have limited amounts of work, so most of the work is reserved for people working exclusively on that project.

So, even if you have selected all the projects, you shouldn't expect to see an even mix of work units. Most of the projects running at WCG have no shortage of work. If you have only selected FAAH, for example, then it would be unusual (and temporary) for you to get a "no work available" message.

So, just pick the projects you are interested in, and let WCG balance the weights. If you are worried about there being no work from the projects you have chosen, then also select "send me work from other projects if no work is available from my selection".

I think a priority system would conflict with the load balancing. It would certainly make balancing work very complicated.

Re: Project Priority

I have a somewhat related question.

I have always participated in all available projects at WCG. One thing I've noticed is that FA@H seems to get the lion's share of time and work units. I don't have a problem with that, figuring that WCG knows what they're doing in terms of distributing the workload. But I would like to see statistics on how many units my box has completed for each project.

Is that something that's been considered for addition to the website?

Re: Project Priority

It's definitely on the wish-list of the CA's to the WCG developers. Maybe not at machine level, but hopefully a by-project at member level similar to the global by-projects.

As to the share out of work, u can have a look at the WU's per project handed out and sum them up. U'll conclude that the bulk of work is done for FA@H. It's WCG philosophy to first line give specific project work to those who e.g. only want to do Help Defeat Cancer and then divvy out the remainder on the basis of the remaining pool. With limited supply for some projects, it will thus result in more work going to FA@H for those that have chosen to crunch from a broader selection.

Work Units done December 30 (all time):
FA@H: 54,186 (33,466,419) ***
HCMD: 542 (4,222) ** Phase 1 only on WCG(UD) Agent
HDC: 18,415 (3,559,526) *
HFP2: 21,391 (2,223,815)
GC: 18,243 (821,603) **

I agree with Didactylos.... the algorithm to share out work would become exponentially more complicated if 1 / 2 / 3 priorities were to be handed out, also because work needs to be prepped for the feeders in batches for different operating systems.

* limited supply

** Those that had NOT selected ALL projects, will not get work of new projects. It has to be manually add!

*** Deselecting FA@H results in a reasonable even spread of work of the remaining for in pure quantitive terms. It does not consider work unit duration!

Re: Project Priority

OK, I understand that a detailled priority system would be awkward to implement, and probably just as confusing to most users.

But, I got fed up with my pc's only doing FA@H so chose all but that (particulary as that is my least 'favourite' project... don't mind doing a bit for it, but the others are higher priority IMHO)

However, because I had to specify the projects that I did want my PC to do work on, it meant that I missed the two new projects that came online.

Would it be possible to have an option to automatically opt-in to new projects. (i.e. when a new project appears, if a user has auto-opt-in enabled, that project is automatically included in the list of projects to run... even if some existing projects are currently excluded (but the excluded projects remain excluded))

Or in other words, rather than specifying those you want your PC to work on, have an option to specify those that you _don't_ want your PC to work on (rather than 'only work on X,Y,Z', have the option instead 'work on everything but X,Y,Z')

Re: Project Priority

An option to auto-opt in for new projects, even if you have not selected all projects is interesting. Will check if it made it to our 2007 wish list.

It used to be that all would opt in automatically for new projects, but it was felt that it could conflict with individual preferences i.e. one or the other crunching, that could have a non humanitarian application like Antrax and small pox and some would just want HDC as their personal mission.

All that said, HCMD was explicitly not auto-opted in to allow for all the errors to flush out over the holiday season. An opt-in run is programmed to happen once all is settled in, which seems to have been achieved now after about 5.4 thousand units.
