Hey Guys,
I'm a long-time cruncher, but first time poster. First off, can we make a sticky here about what systems you can run BOINC on and what systems you can't? Secondly, I've got a Cell Broadband Engine processor over here at 3.2ghz waiting to join the cause. I'm running Yellowdog Linux 5 on my Playstation 3, and would love to run BOINC on it when I'm not gaming. I'm betting a ton of results would be pouring out. I've found BOINC compiled for PPC, although haven't gotten it working yet. I'm thinking we'll need to get some work units though, and I'm not seeing any other projects besides SETI compiled. If someone would like shell access to make this happen, I can make that happen. I don't think the YDL for PS3 ships with many compilers or .so files, so it could be difficult, but it'd be worth it. Thanks guys. -Nate Solberg (nate@) Nordic PC www.nordic-pc.com |

BOINC will run on all the platforms supported by WCG. x86 Windows/Linux, and Intel/PPC Mac.
We've had the PS3 discussion many times before. So, while your offer is generous, WCG are already aware of the possibilities and problems. WCG are exploring the options. However, the main programming effort will have to come from the owners of the science applications. That may take time, since they usually have limited resources - and these are big programs, often developed for mainframes over years or decades. We will have to wait to find out which WCG projects, if any, are suitable for running on the PS3. |

Sorry I missed the previous discussions.
I am willing to make my PS3 available for anyone who wants to make it work though. I'm going to get BOINC running on it, so hopefully there will be projects eventually. |

A japanese boinc user have already ran boinc with PS3.
He installed Playstation Linux. PLAYSTATION3 Linux Information Site is http://cell.fixstars.com/ps3linux/index.php/. And made boinc binary. Here is benchimark log. [root@ps3linux bin]# ./boinc_client -run_cpu_benchmarks 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] Starting BOINC client version 5.7.4 for powerpc64-unknown-linux-gnu 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.16.0 zlib/1.2.3 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] Data directory: /usr/local/bin 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] Processor: 2 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] Memory: 197.53 MB physical, 511.99 MB virtual 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] Disk: 42.71 GB total, 35.41 GB free 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [SETI@home] URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 2904959; location: home; project prefs: default 2006-11-30 15:11:32 [---] No general preferences found - using BOINC defaults 2006-11-30 15:11:34 [---] Running CPU benchmarks 2006-11-30 15:12:33 [---] Benchmark results: 2006-11-30 15:12:33 [---] Number of CPUs: 2 2006-11-30 15:12:33 [---] 287 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 2006-11-30 15:12:33 [---] 995 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU 2006-11-30 15:13:54 [---] Received signal 2 2006-11-30 15:13:54 [---] Exit requested by user But benchimark score is too low. Perhaps ppc64 optimization did not work. |
