BOINC's automatic network connection issue

Hi,

I've told BOINC whats the network connection is the default so it would use it whenever it needs something from the internet.

The problem is, that it works fine only when the screensaver is off/ the computer is not idle. When I wake up I see that it couldnt connect and 2 seconds after the screensaver is turned off from me moving the mouse it connects and upload/download what it needs

here is the log up until boinc connects

Re: BOINC's automatic network connection issue

I have a vague recollection that this is caused by the network bombing while in screensaver mode. It is generally only an issue on dodgy or dialup connections. Is your net connection generally healthy?

Assuming you use Windows, could you check the event log for network issues?

Re: BOINC's automatic network connection issue

I have a stable DSL connection. It's not always on because I don't need it to be. It never disconnected or anything like that

The thing is that on the second that I move the mouse it quickly connects with no problems.

Re: BOINC's automatic network connection issue

A thought: do you have any security software that may be blocking connections while your screensaver is active?

ZURP, How is it that moving your mouse re-establishes the DSL and what conditions have u configured to 'disconnect'. DSL can be up, but your ISP may decommission the IP address if you are not actively on line.

Have a look in the options, Connections tab and see if your DSL connection is listed. Hit deselect/remove standard connection, whatever is listed there. In my case, and what i read from other posts, the DSL is not listed(?)..... it's like that IE option where u set.... 'never dial', because a line is always there.

Under Preferences, what of the 3 option of connection have u chosen, Network Always Available, Per schedule, or Off (latter of course not).

I looked for the screensaver related connection bombing thing Didactylos mentioned, but most these fora don't have boolean search..... could not find anything screensaver/network disconnect related.

what I meant is that the internet connection is not an always on connection. It never disconnected on its own, and it doesn't have stability issues.

When the screensaver stops I can see in the boinc log that it tried all night to upload/download but it couldnt and at the time I stopped the screensaver/computer stoped idling it connected using the connection I defined in the connection tab under boinc.

It has the ability to connect on it own, like when i'm using the computer, and the internet connection is not connected. So, the automatic connection works, just when its screensaver it doesnt.

in the options I have the "network actiavaity based on preferences" checked

Re: BOINC's automatic network connection issue

To stop this eternal 1 minute trying absent a solution, u could set the connection schedule in the BOiNC device profile to e.g. 08:00am to 11:00pm. Then all your work will be send during day-time. Do set the Connect To Network frequency to e.g. 0.5 days, so enough work is stored on your computer.

Anyway, if you de-select the autodial option as described before, it might resolve. Also there is the Disconnect When done option, highlighted below. If on No, set to Yes or vice versa.... trial and error.

cheers

Device Profiles

Device Profile Name: Default
Set as Default:
Basic Options
Do work only between the hours of: 12 and 12
Connect to the Internet only between: 8 AM and 11 PM
Use no more than: Gigabytes
Available Projects
Participate in All Projects
FightAIDS@Home
Genome Comparison
Help Defeat Cancer
Human Proteome Folding 2
Please note: Some projects may occasionally have periods where no work is available.
If you choose to receive work for only one project, the project may, at times, not have
work units available for download. For this reason, we recommend that you select more than one project.

If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above,
please send me work from another project (this option only applies to BOINC agents).

Advanced Options
Processor Usage
Project Weight:
Do work while computer is in use?
Do work while computer is running on batteries?
Do work only after computer is idle for: minutes
Switch between applications every: minutes
On multiprocessors, at most use: processors
Disk and Memory Usage
Write to disk at most every: seconds
Leave applications in memory while preempted?
Leave at least: Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: % of total disk space
Use no more than: % of total virtual memory
Network Usage
Confirm before connecting to Internet?
Disconnect when done? NO
Connect to network about every 0.5 days

Changes to your profile will not take effect until the next time that your grid agent communicates with the servers
(hit Update in BOiNC projects Tab).
