Members!
----------------------------------------It has now been a month since the "official" launch of this project. What do YOU think about it? I have mananged 76 results returned ... and 65+ days of CPU time (sorry ... now it's "runtime") and 37649 "points" (whatever they are). I would like to hear the experiences of you that have followed it since the launch. Consider this a BLOG I guess. But I would like to hear from the members that have stuck it out. Thanks! <dataman> ![]() |

Well, the most encouraging thing that has happened over the last month is the way the Forum has quieted down. I was afraid that we would be overrun with computer problems, but it has not been so bad.
I hope that the FAQs will continue to evolve, but knreed's post is very encouraging as it shows that this is being done on a weekly cycle. [Grin] Maybe for 17 Dec he will manage to update the SiteMap so that it matches the Help in showing new pages in the FAQs such as the "Agent Paused" page. [Big Grin] I did not chide him for this the morning / night it suddenly popped into existence because it would have seemed like negativist carping. Since I have shifted the topic (just for this post only - - DataMan's thread is a good idea) I might as well add that the page describing the Points System in the FAQs suddenly goes into problems with running the program that affect the points awarded. It was an obvious connection for the person writing that page, thinking about points, but we really need that section cut out and posted under Troubleshooting. And the new page should be listed on SiteMap as well as Help. [Grin] I expect that we will eventually have to remind some people that it is not a good idea to run Windows forever without rebooting. But if they have activated Automatic Updating from Microsoft, then they will probably have to reboot every month anyway for the Update to take effect. |

Thanks Lawerence
----------------------------------------Yes, the forum has settled down and the Admin's do give "us" some attention now. Points? Well, I wish they could be used to offset my credit card balance in this holiday season <LOL> Hope to hear more from the other "core" members. You hang in there Lawerence, as you have helped a lot in supporting this forum. Happy Holidays! <dataman> ![]() |

Yes, it's nice to see the computer/UD software issues quiet down.
----------------------------------------My biggest concern is the attention from admins. If this is supposed to grow to millions of users, the apparently ad hoc treatment won't cut it. In any case, shouldn't there be lots of admin coverage to begin with to at least get positive word of mouth going? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 19, 2004 12:37:49 AM] |

So far this has been a good experience. So far I have 119 results, 69,911 points generated, and ranked 214. I only have one suggestion for a change that would, in my mind, build a better community. It would be great to be able to directly contact other members on your team (or other teams), rather than through the forums, like a chat program. This would be really cool and allow for some real time interaction with members and admins. There could be a variety of chat rooms like the forums to help people, or to allow for just plain fun. This is a great project, and I can't wait to see what the results will bring in the future. I also cannot wait to see what future projects this community will be able to tackle (mission to mars? deep space exploration? who knows?) I would suggest that the World Community Grid propose to the Government that they install this program on all of their NIPRNET systems. As an employee of the DoD, I know that they have tens of thousands of PC's always on and not in use 24/7, and that would boost the processing power greatly! All you need to do is prove the system is absolutely secure. Just imagine what you could accomplish with that much raw power... |

Thanks much for your comments, Anthony
----------------------------------------We (Community Admins) have asked to have a new forum more like a chat room for communication, fun and discussions not connected with with core task of crunching numbers. I am happy to see you feel the same way. This is a very open forum so far and I would hate to see it more tightly regulated because of "flames" and political discussions/attacks. Thanks for the support! <dataman> ![]() |

Anthony --
I agree that inter-team communication would be desirable. David Autumns has set that up for "My Online Team" on our own web site, but it would be nice if WCG could step up and provide that for everyone somewhere here on the WCG site. Happy holidays and keep on crunching. |

Yeah, i'm really enjoying this project too.
@Tomwp: I guess only the people with problems come to the board. The ones where everything runs smoothly don't have to come here ![]() |

I guess only the people with problems come to the board. The ones where everything runs smoothly don't have to come here ![]() This could be right for some people but not all. Some of the more active members here are very active crunchers and therefore not having any real problems. I like to read the threads and contribute when I can as I feel that this is part of being part of the Community. |
