This could be right for some people but not all. Some of the more active members here are very active crunchers and therefore not having any real problems. I like to read the threads and contribute when I can as I feel that this is part of being part of the Community. That's true, i too haven't got any problem with the project so far. But i wanted to say that most people who don't have problems don't visit this board! |

I came on board in the flood of 11/17 and haven't had any problems. I have only one PC with 25,332 points. On my team I seem to be a fairly average cruncher. I'm glad to be doing something useful after all that alien silliness over at Seti@home.

My experience here has been a very satisfying one with only one glitch when a number of us got a few incompatible work units.
Since then things have run very well for me and I have thoroughly enjoyed contributing. I joined on 16/11/2004 and I am only running one machine. I have managed only 28,313 points so far running 24/7 though I am pleased to do my bit towards this project. First let me take this opportunity to apologise for retaliating to a number of negative posts in the forums, from a very unsavoury member who it seems thrives on controversy. Quote: (An Eye for an Eye Leaves the Whole World Blind) and as a mature adult in my late 50s I should know better It has never been my intention to cause a flame war with anyone here but some of the rude and derogatory comments made in the forums towards the very precious and well meaning members here have been appalling, A number of well meaning Members here including myself, have bent over backwards to alleviate this problem to no avail. I have it on good authority from a System Admin that things are going to change for the better in the near future This is welcome news indeed and can only improve the experience for all the members here, new and old. My father once said that one doesn’t get a Second Chance to Create a First Impression and I think it is very important that the new members here do get a good first impression and are able to post threads without reprisal I am ranting again so I should wind this up by wishing everyone here a Very Merry Christmas Best wishes <GRAHAM> |

Well i like most people were frustrated in the beggining with the lack of replies from the admin. well thats changed now for the much better. Its probbly one of the most important things that could have happened to this project. Now we can show the new people that theres someone out there actually listining to us. -out of somethings that i would like to see for this site is maybea reply to the "CPU % usage" issue. -another thing, more advertising for this project. -and lastly, a reply from admin. to the "Expanding the scope of this project" thread. which flirts with the idea of getting this distributed computing software on to next generation home consoles(an idea which is novel and packed with HUGE POTENTIAL). *Marry Christmas and happy new year everyone* ![]() |

Well, let's see... I installed my work desktop and home laptop back in the first days of the official launch and have since racked up 86 days of runtime, 88 results, and 56,110 points (#555). Not bad for just two devices.
Overall experience has been good. Had some glitches early on, but they were all resolved one way or another (code updates, UDTweaker, Threadmaster, winter drop in temperature and a room fan helping to keep my laptop from overheating when run 24/7, et cetera). I lost a bunch of work units for a while on the laptop when the battery would die or computer crash and it would cancel out without saving. Just had to get used to shutting down and switching over to my second battery for the last five minutes of my train commute (which is when it would usually give out). Other than the first few days when I was working things out I've mostly only lurked on the forums. They have definitely gotten better organized and maintained, and that should help new people coming in. In general I'm satisfied. Only things I'd still like to see are some sort of rough guage of overall 'project status', information on what other projects have been submitted / are under consideration, and a discussion / comparison of WCG to the various other grid projects out there to serve as a guide in explaining to people why they should switch. I think that last is really the biggest issue at this point. Distributed computing like this has been around and popular for years now, so many (most?) of those inclined to contribute have already heard of it and are doing so somewhere else. Advertising is good for bringing in people who have never done this before, but those who are doing so already seem most likely to remain where they are. So what makes this a better choice than seti, folding@home, grid.org, et cetera? I think it is better set up as a 'clearinghouse' for projects than the others, but that's only a plus when there are lots of projects and lots of users - which we don't have yet. Logically we should be trying to combine the user bases rather than split them into various grids. While the primary plan for new projects here seems to be to review submissions, I might suggest reaching out to other grid projects (first the smaller ones) to offer to host their project with our user base as well. From there, integrating their engine into WCG could transfer the entire user base or we'd just 'inherit' some of them when that other project was completed. |
