Ok, I just installed BOINC (latest version, Mac OS X) and set it up. It downloaded a work unit fine (faah - fighting AIDS at home, I assume) and starts working.
But every time I check the progress is basically a random number between 0% and 2%. If I watch it, it increases, but the next time I check it will be lower... I have been stopping and starting it (set it to only run when the computer isn't in use, using the screen saver). Also, the CPU time shows it has only been running for 4 minutes, but I was running it for several hours just before... I've kept an eye on the name, and it hasn't changed work units. Is this normal behaviour? Any ideas what's going on? |

Ok, after a bit more fiddling I've figured out that every time it starts again, it is starting from 0%. Surely this can't be normal behaviour! I can't believe that a work unit only gets completed when it is all done in one go!
I have "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" set to No - doesn't it save the done work to disk when it pauses? |

Scaryfish, here's a link to a table relating to 'checkpointing'. Please read this thread as it will clarify what's happening... sort of from my own perspective when i did not know better and went thru the discovery mode. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=8331#70535

Oh, ok.
----------------------------------------Huh. Well in that case, if I have one of the work units with no checkpoints, and I have my client set to only work when the computer isn't in use, it will never finish. (Unless I leave it on and unattended for the estimated 22 hours it will take to complete - ok, my computer is a bit old :P ) Is there any way to tell what type of work unit you have? Do other projects (aside from FAAH) have in general more checkpoints, and so would be more suitable for a slower computer? Thanks for the help, by the way. Also, you should look at the minimum requirements page at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq
This shows that Genome Comparison needs less memory than any other project. You can run it with 'Leave in memory' enabled. |
