Hello,
----------------------------------------a friend of mine wants to know what happens about results. For example, if the project FAAH gives results which enable to solve aids' problem. In this case, will wcg want to apply for a patent ? In other words, does wcg could patent the work made by community people ? If the answer is yes, could you give me some explaination because, I must convince my friend that you are not a silly organisation or a small strage laboratory. If the answer is no, could you tell me why ? Thank you for your answer. I hope this friend will be convinced. ![]() |

All results from research run by WCG is public. Once the research is completed, the papers will be published in open journals, and the results database will be made public.
This will only make one part of the process unpatentable. Laboratories that build on the work may still be able to make patent claims, but by releasing the WCG work into the public domain, it will be easier for other labs to create generic drugs. As part of their proposal to WCG, each project must explain how they plan on making the results public: 10. In order to have the greatest impact, all results generated by research conducted on World Community Grid must remain in the public domain. How do you propose to make the results of the project available to the global research community? WCG only accept projects when the Advisory Board is satisfied they are in the interests of humanity, and the legal agreement they sign ensures that the results will be public. |

Hello Wilgard,
The answer is simple. All our results become public domain. Any knowledge that we gain becomes part of the pool of public knowledge that everybody draws upon. This is part of a legally enforceable contract between us and the research institutes that we assist. If you go to http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewSubmitAProposal.do on our website, you can download the documents (in PDF format, use Acrobat Reader) that we send people who propose a project to us. We run their project for free on our computers. In return, they make the results freely available to the world. These results may be helpful to someone who develops or discovers a new process or drug. If so, he can patent it under the laws of his country. But he cannot claim ownership over the knowledge that we have released to the public domain. Lawrence |
